Which motor for 50cc class ?

Hi

I have decided for various reasons to go for for the 50cc class of plane .

I am going to start with the Kange Laser 2000 and I am not sure which motor to go for , not only for this plane but for this size in general.
I would like to choose between ZDZ or MVVS (maybe DA).

If ZDZ should I be looking at the 50 or 60 ?

I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks
Tim

RE: Which motor for 50cc class ?

I can recommend the 3W 50cc based on my experiences with them. I have two Xtra-Fun gas fun flys that come with the 3W 50cc and tuned pipe. They have lots of power, are very light, and extremely reliable for me. The airplane with the 3W 50cc setup weighs in at 11lbs. Not bad for a 78" gasser in my opinion. With the pipe, it has a very good throttle response which is great for torkrolling.

Since I haven't used the other offerings, take my response with a grain of salt :) But based on my experiences I don't see why I would at this point. It gives me everything I wanted in a small gas setup.

The top three in order of popularity;
DA
ZDZ
Brison

The MVVS is reported to have service issues (when its needed).

The 3W is 4.36 lbs, over a pound heaver than above.

The ZDZ-60, using the same crankcase as the ZDZ-80, is about a pound heaver than the 50NG.

I woulkd stay with the 50cc class of engines. The 60's will be more weight and the increased power will not offsewt the weight penalty in wing loading. DA, Brison, BME, Taurus are among the first I would consider, and with the exception of the Taurus, are relatively comparable in power output. The Taurus being a touch more in that department, IMO. The price of the engine and it's relative all up weight will be the determining factors.

The zdz 60 is an excellent engine , is heavier but can swing bigger props easier I take a zdz 60 over a DA 50 anyday.

The zdz 50 looks good but I don't have any experience with it.

The 3W 50 is excellent a litle bit heavy for a 50.

The Taurus is 3pounds 5oz w/o muffler.
if you look at the other weights they are listed as 3.5 which equals 3lbs 8oz.so when you're checking weights look for the decimal point. weights can be deceiving.
A Taurus will also cost a few bucks more. but IMO its worth it
