Wolf Predator
Has anyone heard of a Wolf Predator engine? I can't seem to find any information on this engine. It is supposed to be 1.8 cu in or 30 cc. Nice looking engine with Bisson muffler and CW ignition.

yes, I believe it is built around the 30cc Homelite jug (shaved down) with a nicely machined case and innerds... I took mine apart to see how it was internally but never ran it (I bought one but traded it for something bigger before I ever ran it, about 3 or 4 years ago).
There was a review in MAN I believe back a few years... or it could have been FM or RCM too, I cant remember exactly. AJC |

Thanks AJC, you are certainly talking about the same engine. This one has been sitting in the local hobby shop for at least 4 years now. The owner ask me to make an offer. I can use an engine around that size so I think I'll take a chance. I can always use it for trading material.

Harry, I have 2 of these engines and have flown both. One is an earlier one, beautifully polished crankcase, piston port induction (side carb). This is called a Model B Wolf Predator. It is the lighter of the 2. Both are in the G23 weight class, more or less, but are way more powerful. The second engine is the latter one, a rear induction RI version that came with aluminum standoffs. It is not as highly polished as the first but still quite nice. It's in a BalsaNova 120. Both swing 19x8 props nicely, approx 7100 rpm+ prior to break in. These were made by AJ Engineering, up in Wisconsin, up until approx 1-1/2 to 2 years ago. They were nearly as expensive as DA50's (maybe $50 less) but came with a nice muffler. I don't think the price made sense, but you can tell a lot of work went into it. AJ Engineering stopped producing them after approx 250 were made, as I recall, because he was unable to obtain the Homelite jugs any longer. The RI is a little easier to start, and the carb is fitted with a choke plate. It supposedly was a bit more powerful than the Piston port version, but I didn't observe this on my test stand. The piston port version has a standard G23 style carb.
I have 4 mufflers for my 2 engines. The early Model B has a CNC machined muffler, that is beautiful, but is essentially a diverter style, and incredibly loud. The RI came with a narrow wraparound pitts style, aimed at warbirds, since the engine profile is narrow with the rear carb. I also have a wider wrap around. Last is an inverted Pitts muffler that Bisson made for me. Bisson has the needed dimensions so if you were to need any kind of muffler, Bisson would likely be able to take care of you. Got 2 also, 1 side port and one rear intake. 18x8 Mezlik in the 8000 range. 19x8 MA Simitar in the 7600 range. These engines do bad things to an Ultra Stick lite.

Thanks guys for all the input. I bought the engine today. Kinda felt guilty after looking at all the paperwork that came with it and found out it was listed for $529.95 in 2001. It is the early version with the highly polished crankcase, side carb, C & H ignition, and a Bisson wrap-around muffler. The muffler seems huge for this size engine but it should be fairly quiet. At $200.00 I figured I couldn't go wrong, and the parts are worth far more than that.

Wow. You stole that engine! Awesome deal. Enjoy it. Like I said, the price was not much cheaper than a DA50, which is why they didn't sell very well, I suppose.

A couple more photos. Notice the early CNC machined exhaust diverter/muffler on the model B, as well as the Bisson inverted muffler on the RI version. I have a wraparound also just like Jai's one in the photos above, plus a narrow wraparound that's meant to fit inside narrow warbird cowls. This latter one is what came standard with the RI version.
I installed the red bellcrank, which is a modified Hitec servo arm, with a brass bushing. It's more rigid than the stock Dubro nylon bellcrank, thereby reducing some slop in the throttle linkage. Also, that was 7900 rpm on an 18x8 MA Scimitar. After some more running it eventually hit 8400 on that prop with the straight diverter (really LOUD!). About 7800-7900 with the narrow warbird wraparound. 7100 for the RI version on the 19x8 Mejzlik. |

I have one of the B models. It has the CNC machined muffler than goes up or down. Has a G-23 glow carb and has Terry's ignition system. I paid $529 in spring of 2,000 for it. Bought it at Toledo. It's one running son of a gun for it's size. It turns about 8100 with a MAS Classic 18-8. In a way I suppose I wasted my money but I have something super that you cannot get anymore.
