Smart-Fly

With a Smart-Fly ignition cut off switch do you still need a mechanical switch in the ignition circuit?

Yes. I have this unit and it was super easy to setup and use.

No, you do NOT need an additional 'mechanical switch'.

It even describes this in the instructions.

The transmitter on, the switch on transmitter on, you're ready to run.

The switch off on the transmitter off, you're ignition is OFF.

BUT BUT BUT, with this method, they suggest disconnecting from Batt source between flying days, as the
unit will continue to draw a LITTLE bit from the Rx pack even when not in the 'on' mode.

Good luck !

I believe according to AMA safety guidelines, you still need a mechanical switch that can kill the ignition. This is a safety measure so someone can kill the motor without the Radio or with a malfunctioning radio. Also, it seperates the switch from the battery, which if not done, will allow the battery to drain as the electronic switch is always drawing some current. If you use a Lipo pack, this is especially important, as you will ruin the battery and potentially catch the thing on fire, which would not be good. ;-)
