Muffler Paint
 

Hey guys,

I was watching the Power Block on Spike TV today and I saw this paint used on wheels(full scale). It says it can handle temps. Up to 500 degrees. Anyone happen to remember what the paint was called? I figured I'd post on here before I went through all the automotive shops in town.

I was thinking of painting my mufflers to match the scheme on my plane. Do you think this would cause the mufflers to heat up too much and possibly cause the interior of the cowl to heat up too much? I will have good flow through the cowling. The engine is a 3W 106CS.. I'm pretty sure the mufflers wont hit 500 degrees correct?

We have seen muffler temps go as high as 700 degrees and enough to melt most locking agents. We now use a cement that is good for 2100 degrees, so far no problems. You can get some of the powder paint as high temp (a lot higher than 500) and it is usually expensive , you might scorch or discolor the 500 degree temp paint. This depends on the engine, some of them run very cool.

Henry Ford used to say that you could get his cars in any color as long as it was black. That's what I've found in off the shelf high temperature paints. One that I really like is Krylon 1618 BBQ & Stove. It says on the can that it withstands temperatures up to 1200 degrees F. It's a very flat black and lasts really well. The muffler needs to be very clean before you apply it.

What color do you think I should paint them? I thought originally the only choice would be to paint them to match the plane.. But that was engine the engine was to be all gray.. Now the Cylinder Heads are like copperhead orange.. Then there's black which matches everything, kinda like blue jeans:).

Anyways here's the plane, and engine so you can see what I mean. (NOTE: The colors on the plane are alot deeper in person if that matters.)

Why paint them at all? I don't think anyone pays attention to muffler color.

Save yourself the trouble and stink of it all. No matter what paint you use after time it will all flake off anyway unless you send it off and have it electrostatically done.
