US Engines 41CC
Anyone had any experience with the US Engines 41 cc engine? I just bought one for use on a Lanier Stinger 120. It calls for a G38, but I got a good deal on the new 41, and I figured the extra power would be good for vertical.

US 41
I have used the older style US 41's and found them to be good motors for the price...They are not $600 and your not getting a $600 motor...I had one on a 120 Stinger and it flew it well, but did not have unlimited vertical.. It is a fun combo..My 2 cents..Brian :D

US Engines 41CC
Thanks Brian for the info. I figured it probably close to being as good as a Zenoah. I noticed the HP rating is about 1/2hp better that the G38, so I figured it would be nice to have the power

G38/US41
You know what SK...I do not think the US41 has any more power what so ever than the G38...If you get a good deal on a G38, go for it, you will see no less power....Another 2 Cents worth...Brian

US Engines 41CC
I've been running mine for two years now and I don't have a bad word to say on it . Mine just like lots of gas when starting it used it on a dynaflite pt-19 all the power it can handle good luck I think you will be happy with it.

US Engines 41CC
Brian is right, in fact I think you may find the 38 has noticably more torque than the US41. Be careful with manufacturers horsepower ratings they are not always a good indicator of reality.

Thanks guys for the info. I had a used G38, but sold it to buy the US41. I really came out about even between the engines, so hopefully the 41 will do a good job on the Stinger.

Have done a lot of tinkering with these engines. You would be surprised how much more power they make with a carb change. Put a Q52 carb on with a B&B muffler and use a Pro Zinger 18x10 or Master Airscrew Classic 18x10. We get 7900 RPM on the ground with these mods. B&B sells the carb for $39.

I know what you mean about the mods. I have a friend that builds competition chainsaws, he has a n engine shop that he can build/modify just about any time of gas engine. He even has a flow bench.
Last year I had a modified Homelite 31cc gas engine on my stinger. We installed a B&B pitts style muffler on it, and a larger carb. He also drilled the carb, etc. I was surprised, it would swing a 16 x 10 prop at about 7800rpm. Plus, we used 104 octane turboblue with beanoil, ran great and smelled good too....... I can't wait to have him mod the 41cc. |
US 41
The current US41 engines come stock with an aluminum pitts style muffler and the great planes velocity stack on the carb. The tower website and catalog do not show pics of either of these "upgrades" but for $249 they are currently included. :)

I did not know that..Do they still include the spring starter?? Is the muffler a B&B?? Do the carb adjusting screws face the prop or the rear of the motor?? Thanks Brian

US 41
Sorry guys no camera...no pics.
Engine serial # 012099 Walbro carb # 121 MT530 High and low adjusting screws face the rear (firewall) of the engine. Spring starter is preinstalled. Preinstalled pitts muffler is a 4 7/8" X 1 3/8" diameter main tube with two 2 7/8" X 1/2" diameter exhaust tubes (looks like a cast unit with a light beadblast surface, very dull) The velocity stack supplied is NOT a great planes as listed in my prior post. The GP stack is a 3/4" ID stack. The supplied one is 3/4" diameter at the base and 1" diameter at the top, with an overall height of 1 1/4". Very similar to what I have seen on Weber carbs on automobiles (you know the ones with tennis balls in them when they are on display). I'd weigh it but sorry no scale. :( Could someone tell me if this is a larger carb than other ones supplied on these motors in the past. Thanks! |
carb
The original "good" carb was the same size bore all the way thru..If the bore tapers and is smaller in the middle of the bore it is the smaller one..Also the good ones I got had the High and Low adjustment screws facing the prop...not toward the rear..Brian

Enough Power??
I have a GP PITTS BIPE ARF on order and am wanting to put a US 41cc up front. Do you fliers with experience w/41's think this would be enough for this bird. Have a G45 on a Staudaucher and I really like that combo, but I can get into a 41 for half the $. The bigger carb sounds like a good cheap way to go to increase power.
Thanks for any replies. RORO |
US Engines 41CC
I got my first US-41 engine about a year back and placed it on an ultra stick, around 15 lbs. I was really unhappy with its power. It was good for Sunday flying but I was looking for hover power. I also detest how you must mount the engine with the bolts from the rear of the firewall. Does anybody really like mounting this engine this way??? James Goss

US Engines 41CC
I have been flying a US41 in a 17lb. G-Shark forabout a year. Power is adequate but no barnburner. Tried the larger carb, but
showed no appreciative gain, maybe combined with B&B muffler is the combo needed. Engine is good value for the money. |
Mounting...
James...Those rear mount cups are used on a lot of engines and you are right.....they are a pain to mount from the rear.......
Here is a fix....Run 4 allen bolts in from the outside. You may have to releive the cup mount slightly with a dremel tool.Leave the bolts there permanently.then simply shove the mount with the engine attatched through the holes in the firewall, and attatch a washer and nylon insert bolt to each stud, from inside. With any room to play with at all,you can usually get a small socket on the bolts for tightening. For fitting lines etc, during construction, where you want to take the engine on and off numerous times just use a couple of ordinary bolts on two of the studs hand tightened.Works for me.... |
G38 in comparison
Just for comparison, I fly a G38 on a Stinger 120 (Brian has seen it a few times ;) ). It is a stock G38 and I get 8000 RPMs on the ground using a Zinger pro 18x8. Not a hovering machine, but good stout sport performance.
The HP ratings supplied with engines are pretty much useless. The G38 is rated at 2.5 HP. An OS 160FX glow is rated at 3.7 HP, but still spins a Zinger pro 18x8 between 8000 and 8200 on the ground, so the extra 1.2 HP in the rating doesn't mean a lot. |
US Engines 41CC
Do you guys think I will get good performance with the 41cc on the Stinger 120?

Address for SK
I was gonna scan you a couple photos and lost your address...Thanks..Brian :(

Stinger 120
If your US 41 turns props about the same as a G38, it will give a Stinger 120 what I would call very good sport performance. Mine is tremendous fun to just fly hard. Built properly it is a good stout airframe. Full throttle inverted passes down low followed by a 1/2 outside loop and various snaps and tumbles at the top are the types of things I like to do with it.
BTW: Conventional wisdom is that you should run an 18x10 on a G38. I tried it and I tached about 7300 RPM on the ground. When I tried the 18x8 Pro Zinger that jumped to 8000 and the engine/airframe just seems to have a lot more punch. Might be the same with a US 41. |
US Engines 41CC
Thanks Jim for the info. I too agree that probably the little more rpm's is enough to see a difference.
Ken |
US 41
Don't be afraid to Try a 20-8, or 20-6 for more rpm and thrust but less speed...
Conventional wisdom is not always correct.... |
Boost performance of US 41
rcign
Can you boost the performance of US 41 by upgrading them, if so how much $, what is done, and what could we expect with the upgrade? Thanks for a reply RORO |
US 41
Some of the later ones had crooked hubs and flywheels..I was able to re tap the hub and straighten the flywheel..Took away some of the vibration...I'e heard that a larger carb works better, but have not tried it....I have one here, I'll try the larger carb tomorrow....RC.....
