Need engine advice
Hey everyone Im just trying to figure out what to put on my Great Planes christain eagle II bi-plane.
I had one with a fuji 50 and it didnt have enough power, i think the engine was messed up. I could never get it to the RPMs stated. I have seen people with Fuji 64s on them and i was wondering if this is the better engine. I was thinking about putting a DA 50 on it but not sure. I want plenty of power to fly the plane, im not looking to hover it or anything i just want the power to do aerobatic stuff like its suppose to. My plane will stall out when just doing a regualar loop = ( im up for and suggestions this is my 1st gas plane not sure about gas. |
RE: Need engine advice
FenderBean,
Talk to Scott at brillelli engines and he'll give you the information you are looking for even if you don't buy an engine from him. Brillelli makes quality engines and has the best customer support you will ever find. I know they have flown a Christen Eagle with one of their 46cc engines and it flew well, but only Scott can tell you if it has the power you are looking for. Brillelli is going to release 2 new engines a 54cc and a 60cc and I know one of these would do the job. I am waiting for the new 54cc engine to go on a 80" Cap-232 I have. The best thing is these engines will cost you about $200.00 less than a DA50. Here is their web site. Give them a call or send them a e-mail you won'y be sorry.:D www.brillelli.com |

I'm not being critical and I hate to call Scott to ask him. That is one busy man. TIA |
RE: Need engine advice
Origionally I was going to do the 54. Then I found a 60cc that uses the same stroke crank. We are going to make a couple 54cc's because we have the parts, but after that we will just do the 60cc. Weight will be the same for both so why mess with the 54 ;)

RE: Need engine advice
What prop and what was your RPM. You should be in the range 6400 to 7100. The Fuji 50 should have been enough power to loop at just over ½ throttle. What is your total weight? Is the engine under any warranty? If yes, send it in for service. Hope you get it working, the Eagle is a great flying plane. If this is your first gasser than I would try to solve the problems with the Fuji, you may have other issues that are messing the engine up. Heat build-up is just one. If you change engines you may have the same problem. I would find a guy in you area to check it out. The Fuji is a good engine for your first gasser.

RE: Need engine advice
well my rpm maxed out at 6500 i was running a 20X8 prop, i even had a 20x10. neither gave me the power, i couldnt go any leaner on the engine or it would die out. It was wierd I would pull up the nose and u could hear the engine bogging down, almost like it was leaning out, but I couldnt go any richer or the RPMs would fall off and couldnt get off the ground. I have a brand new kit in the box and I dont want to drill the holes for the fuji and ruin the mount. I guess i could send it in and have it checked by fuji or something.

RE: Need engine advice
You should find a guy at your field. What you may have to add is a tube to the diaphragm on the carb. If you have not done this before you may need to see it on someone’s plane. The brass tube is silver soldered to the Float Diaphragm plate and a piece of silicone tubing is run into the firewall. The firewall should be sealed. It sounds like you are way lean. Can you post a picture of the bottom cowl cut-outs and the carb exit?
Go to Greater Southwest Aero Modelers web site look for Tech Site and look up Walbro Card Tune Up and Illustration This has some tips on how to adjust the carb. http:tech.flygsw.org/walbro_tuneup.htm good luck |
RE: Need engine advice
Go with the lightest 45 to 50cc high quality engine you can find. Weight has a serious effect on the approach and landing speed of the C.E. Toss the brand loyalty crap in the trash and go with light, strong, and reliable for decision factors.

RE: Need engine advice
FenderBean,
Did you ever here back from Scott at Brillelli? I know he can help you!:D |
RE: Need engine advice
yeah he didnt say much other than they used there smaller engine on it, im thinking about there new ones they come out with the its a 50 or 60 cc cant remember , they got some new crank cases I think or something that lets them pack the muscle and keep the same weight as the smaller one. hard to understand what he tried to say = )
I just need to know whats the best engine to put on this plane. I want some I know will work, some people say go light and more power, well if i go light then I will have to add about 2lbs of weight to balance, since the fuji 50 weights about 5 lbs and balances it perfect. I dont know im so new to big planes, but i deff want to go cheap if i can get a light weight powerfull eng cheaper than a DA that will be reliable then im all game = ) |
RE: Need engine advice
FenderBean
You won't go wrong with a Brillelli engine. They are light and powerful and the support you get after the sale is worth buying the engine any way. If you can, since you might have to add some weight to the plane to get it to balance right I would go with to 60, but I know the 54 will have the power you will be looking for. Good luck with you venture and let us know how it goes.:D |
RE: Need engine advice
thanks i will prob go with the 54 since it should have more than enough power. if not ill sell it and go with the 64 hehe
|
RE: Need engine advice
FenderBean ,
The brillelli engines are great. If you want the 54cc engine you better hurry. I think Scott said that he only has a limited amount of the 54cc engines and after their gone he will be making and selling only the 60cc engine. Look at post #5 in this thread. |
RE: Need engine advice
Knowing the power of the Brillelli engines I think either the 54 or 60 will do the job. If you can spend just a little more the 60 is going to weigh the same as the 54 so why not go with the 60. If it has to much power you can always fly around at half throttle. Good luck and keep us up to date with you project:D I would love to see the plane fly with either engine.

RE: Need engine advice
FenderBean,
Just got an e-mail from Scott at Brillelli and it looks like he may be testing the 54cc & 60cc engine this weekend. We should know real soon about his findings and if they will do the job. Scott will not sale anything that is marginal.. His engines really rock so I cannot wait to find out how they perform for him. I think you will have to go with the 60cc because he said he will not be doing the 54cc after this because the 60cc is the same weight and will be stronger.:D:D I already told him I wanted the 54cc so I will go with that engine. My 80" Cap-232 should weigh only 15lbs and this engine and should have more than enough power to hover it. I have been practicing on G3 with a Cap-232 to get myself ready.:D:D |
