Coil question

On a BT-86 the coils are mounted on the top of the engine. Are they there because it's a convenient place or are they there for cooling.
Reason i ask is i have one and to fit it in the intended cowl i will need to move the coils to behind the cylinders or anyplace else for it to fit.

RE: Coil question

The coil can be moved provided it does not have any secondary parts connected directly to it such as a Hall effect sensor. Make sure that the ignition high tension lead will reach the spark plug without rubbing against anything that could wear through its outer jacket. You probably will have to make some sort of bracket to hold it as opposed to bundling it in foam and tie wrapping it to the airframe.
Model engines in the 30s and 40s had a loose coil that could be mounted anywhere around the motor.

RE: Coil question

The CH ignition conversion moves both coils to the front of the engine. On the magneto 86 the replacement flywheel is much smaller than the Fuji one so the coils fit nicely.
