long range tach?

Hi
I have seen a tach that can take a rpm reading from 5 or 6 feet away. does anyone know that brand of tach is good for better then a foot or so away?

Thanks in advance

TNC---They are manufactured by Fromeco now and can be bought there or at many other distributors. I think Don's hobby has about the best price on them. By far I think this is the best tach out there.

I use a Stihl inductive tack, which connects to the spark plug wire.

The little Hanger 9 tach reads from a couple of feet and if you setup an accurate aim -and see a solid reading --the reading is as accurate as any expensive optical- tach
I have checked readings compared against the direct ignition readout on various engines -- Evolution and ZDZ - the differences are trifling.
All of my engines have direct ignition readouts . (ZDZ and Evolution).
It takes out all of the guesswork -on the ground or in the air.

I bought a TNC tach last summer because I was told it would work from 4 - 6 ft. away. It does work from a greater distance but the best I have been able to obtain is a reading from about 3' in ideal light conditions. The average is about 2'. It works very well but I was a bit disappointed. I wouldn't pay that much to buy another.

Don, send it back for repair (warranty). I can stand up right at the back of my 35%er and it will read just fine. That has to be at least 4 feet plus.

For the budget minded, you can find the GloBee intellitach for $24.95 on the net. It has large LCD numbers, you DO NOT have to multiply by 10 as some other tachs and reads 2,3 & 4 blades.

I haven't tested for max reading distance as it reads as far away I need.

You don't need to multiply by 10 with the new TNC, and I can guarantee that the GloBee won't be able to read past 6-8 inches. The original poster is looking for a long range tach.

Having bought the GloBee before I went with the TNC tach, I think I can comment on the differences between the two which I observed.

For the price I guess it's an okay tach but it doesn't have the range of the TNC, it's more intolerant of the lighting conditions and prop type i.e. wood vs. carbon fiber, RPM reporting has much more fluctuation, and it tended to read higher RPMS on a given engine/prop combo than the TNC.

This particular item, a tach, really is a case of getting what you pay for...;)

Where do you get the direct ignition readouts?

BTW The GloBee tach isnt so good.

Another nice feature of the TNC is it will save the highest rpm reading and still display the real time rpms underneath...

The lead on my Stihl tack is about 4 feet long and it simply loops around the plug wire. The lead is simply a wire and could probably be much longer.

Hope you have not had a prop strikes person incident.

I've been on Don's Hobby site for quite awhile, but can't seem to locate the tach
Can someone point it out for me?

Thanks_bob

I must admit that Don's website is not all that user friendly...

I found the tach on the "Accessories" page just a little way down from the top of that page on the right side, but couldn't come up with a direct link having the pricing information.

I usually call them... :D

Or you can order the tach direct from Fromeco, that's where mine came from;
