Which engine?
 
I am needing a gas engine that can swing a 18x6 or 18x8 (tops) comfortably. I was leaning towards a G26 since the G38 has the rear exhaust and would likely cause mounting issues, I know this as I have a old G38 already with a Bisson muffler on it and it would conflict badly with the firewall. I have considered a custom exhaust but don't know what is available and am trying to keep cost down (I don't need a custom scale $300 setup). The G38 almost seems like too much engine for a 18x6 but the G26 almost seems a bit small to get the 18x6's full potential. Opinions?

Evolution (aka:MVVS) 26GT. 18 x 6 Zoar 8100 plus static on standard pitts type muffler. 9000 and a little bit static using header and tuned pipe at stock length. Very smooth motor. Either setup will pull 11lb plane straight up just fine, the piped setup just goes up alot faster.

A 97" Kangke Monocoupe, the manufacturer recommends a RCS 140 turning an 18x6. It also states that it was tested with everything from a 90 glow to a 2.4 gas. The finished weight is about 12-14 lbs. according to the specs but I plan on having extra electronic goodies in mine so I'm thinking 15-16 lbs especially with a Zenoah. It has a flat-bottom airfoil and at 14 lbs around a 21 oz wing loading. The 2.4 (no brand mentioned) it was tested with was too much power running a 20/10 prop and had bad ground clearance. I have a G38 but the rear exhaust won't be happy without either a different muffler or having 1/4 of the firewall removed. Because of the extra electronics I was trying to get a smaller engine and use an isolation mount as well. I am seeking scale performance but short take-off rolls and landings even when loaded, that is, no problems when weighted down a little, which is why I chose this kit, lots of lift, LOTS of room, and small power requirements in its stock form.

An electronic ignition G-26 weighs basically the same as the Evolution 26GT. I looked at these two a while back. Weight and performance are virtually identical, with the G-26 holding a slight edge both on muffler and pipe systems. Cost is also very close. The only significant difference is the front carb arrangement on the Evolution makes for a much slimmer installation for a narrow cowl. Both are excellent engines, although the reliability edge has to go to the G-26, they run forever with no issues if at all cared for.

I am leaning towards the Zenoah because a near-new one seems to run just over $200 while an Evolution 26GT seems to run just under $400. The G38 could fit in the cowl without the muffler but I am thinking it is too much engine for a 18x6 prop. The side exhaust will work great on the G26 but I was wanting to make sure it wouldn't have problems turning it and an 18x6 would be enough for that weight (15-16 lbs.). I'm not looking for performance, in fact, the manual states that all STANDARD servos were used and are recommended! Just precautionary, I'm using about twice that torque on ailerons and triple on elev/rudder.

The G-26 will turn a Mejzlik 18x6 around 9000rpm (I believe Ralph has stated) and produces about 17lb static thrust. That should be lots to get a lightly loaded floater into the air in short order.

I also have a question maybe i could get some advise, i bought a cap x and using a da-50 for power, my first gas engine, i have heard so many different things being used for safety, i just ordered my pcm reiciver today and metal geared servo's, my question is should i run two off on switches with twl battiers in case of losing one or the other, i also soft mount all of my airplanes with the hyde mount and on all of my other planes i have little to noe vibration but even hard mounted i have never lost a switch or a battery but gas engines, this is my first, any advise would be helpfull.

evolution 26GX, I have the older GT2 on a areoworks 120 yak with an 18x8 and have no problem pulling all the vertical I want.
