I have a ch ignition and need a magnet and the little 3 prong pick up chip so I can run my engine ,I just put it together and I am just itching to get some #'s and was wondering if I can go to my local electronics store and get these and if so what do I get.the chip on my other motor has 3 letters that I can't make out but I think it is RTOv2589 and then all is I need is a magnet.

actualy I was thinking Norvac they have almost any electronic component you could need.

They should. I've seen the magnet and the chip in Radio Shack's big catalog a couple years ago. So it must be pretty standard?

Just got a CH ignition last week.
My little 3 prong chip (hal sensor) (transistor?) has this number....best guess at it anyway.

can't quite read it...

I know radio shack also sells small magnets as well.

Terry from CH may be able to chime in here and tell you which will work best. Looks like they may vary a bit in voltage but look pretty similar to me...

I'd love to dabble with making my own ignition someday...looks like fun....probably shock the heck outta myself a few times playing though..hehehe...zzzap.......zaaap....

The pickups for CH and other EIs are Hall effect transistors. CH sells the pickup with lead and Deans plug attached for around $7.00. They also have the magnets. Try their web site @ ch-ignitions.com.

There is another site I have seen on transistor ignitions for model engines it is jerry-howell.com/ignitions.html. They have a couple of kits and sell the coils. I haven't tried one, but intend to sometime when I get caught up on some other projects.

Use the DN 6852..Works with a weak magnet up to about 1/16" away, closer is good.....
Standard wiring..Sensor with connections facing left, numbers on top..Top connector, signal wire, usually white
Center connector, black wire
Bottom connector, red wire..
I insulate the wires from each other with teflon tubing, just fits over the wire..Heat shrink can also be used...
connect the male Dean's plug to the other end...
Standard connection, red in middle, black close, white farther away...
The south pole of the magnet will trigger the number side, North pole will trigger the blank side...Useful on an inline twin with 2 circuits, 2 sensors, 2 magnets..Or any engine that doesn't fire both plugs together...Or use 1 circuit, 2 magnets 180 degrees apart, 1 sensor, fire one cylinder at TDC, other ar BDC, works fine, Honda has been doing it for years..

rc ign I know this may seem like a simple thing but how do I tell =north from south poles on the magnet,I will be jb welding it in so when it is there it is for good.

Put a spark plug into the boot..Lay the plug on the engine. Connect ignition to battery....
Connect sensor to ignition....
Wave sensor over magnet...
JB the opposite end into the hub. :D

I glued a magnet to the front of my magnet drawer so that the end of the magnet that sticks to that one goes in first...With a little Loctite 680..... :D

I was wondering about getting out an iron and making the whole thing.
I see CH has kits and that other link describes making one but as far as I can tell the NON CH must be a mechanical advance if any.

Im in the process of doing a 46 like yourself and wondering how to start anything larger without spending the extra on an ignition system as I might as well get a ZDZ or such like if the costs escalate.
I take it on your larger projects you are adding an ignition mod ???

5bears.com has transistor ignition schematics that look the same as those at jerry- howell.com, just go to his radial engine section. beware though, these are current hungry kettering type ignitions, not CDI! i experimented awhile ago with an ignition module from an old suzuki swift distributor and although it was compact, light, and super reliable it took about 2.5amps at 6volts! would need a massive battery to get any decent run time. sure had fun though, even with all the shocks i got!

The coil would have a lot to do with current draw. The Modelectric coils are supposed to be low current draw and able to operate on NiCads. Granted "low current draw" is very vague. Does anyone here use the Modelectric coils? Any idea of current draw?

Anybody ever considered using those small hand held tasers for a HEI coil? Bought one for my wife, as big as a pack of smokes, something like 20k or more volts, runs off a single 9v battery, rig up an electronic switch like the hall sensor and insulate the high voltage plug wire at the connecton and I think its possible for a try, dunno about radio interference, just use shielded plug wires. I still have a set of wire braided silicone plug wires on my old truck engine, I think they were made by Mallory.
