Carbuerator modifications?

I have been reading about getting different carbs to hop up a Homelite 22cc engine. I was wondering why don't you just enlarge the venturi on the stock carb? I saw in the article about teaching a weedwacker to fly, that they recommend enlarging the venturi on Ryobi carbs. Does it mess up the flow to enlarge the venturi from 5/16" to 7/16". Also where are you measuring the venturi? Is it at the smallest opening down in the throat of the carb or at a end of the carb opposite the butterfly? Thanks

The venturi is measured at the smallest point...The article on the carb cautioned against boring it out without first removing the brass nozzle that's pressed into the venturi..Even with that done you might destroy some of the other holes...Easier to find a larger carb.....

Venturis are of a specific shape for best fuel draw. If you were to cut it in two it would look like an airfoil. As RCIGN1 says, safer to get a bigger carb. Try your local saw shop for a used one.
