Here is my next test bed for my old DL-50.

Whadda ya trying to do Paul, give your DL a hernia.....19 pound flying weight.....is that like the ones that say 16 and come in at 18 so 19 becomes what?:D:D:D

Hey Ive got a plane that weighs a little over 18 and the Dl pulls it great! I think that it would pull a 19 lb plane very good.

The DL50 will probably pull a 27 pound plane around for sport flying purposes, but not unlimited 3D stuff that's for sure.

RE: DL-50 engine

it probably wouldnt get of the ground at 4 k feet where i live,,,but we forget that some folks use the dl ,s for ,planes other than aerobatic, and of course any seasoned modeller knows for good 3/d power 2 to 1 is preferred in the thrust category,,so if you live near sea level you can allmost trust a rating claimed for a particular engine prop combo,,,,but if you live where i do ,,,break out the scale to see what youre really working with

My new plane won't be any heavier than 17 pounds. My SD-Model Yak weighed 16.5 pounds and it had 150 square inches less wing. And it was a great flying 3D bird. This edge is going to be wonderful. I can't wait!!!:D:D

I live at 800 feet ASL.

paul, i just ordered that edge, thanks for the link, it looks like an awsome plane, i talked with the guy that sellin them and he said they come with ca hinges for control surfaces and suggested we replace them, ya think lol , anyway i dont know if you have time, but if you do , a build thread for it would be awsome, i am still building my 27% cap and am learning as i go, so any help you may be able to offer with this beauty would be great. thanks.

Hey Guys!

I'm having problems with my DL 50. I think it may be ignition issues. Could I please have some help?

Here's the history: new gas, new plug (gapped correctly), on my 4th gallon (Klotz, 45:1)

Here's the problem: It seems like the ignition is dropping out. It first runs well (on the ground), but when I took it up yesterday, I thought it was burbling badly. When I got it to the ground, I realized it was more like missing. It misses across the throttle range, whether idling or at full throttle. The missing is very frequent and constant. I took it into my shop and experiement with the ignition and noticed that at times the spark would fire twice in a a row.

This is a recent development, but it started at the end of gallon 3, and I just thought things were too rich. So, I really took my time tuning the carb, but it just keeps getting worse. It seems that the longer it runs, the worse it gets.

I have a battery monitor on the ignition battery that I can watch as it runs, and there's nothing going on with the batter or the connection to the ignition module.

It has run really well until now. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Bruce

Is your battery's voltage between 4.8 and 6 volts under load?
If so, did you try a direct connection between the battery and ignition so w/o switch?

If you meet these criteria I guess it's best to send the ignition including sensor in to have it checked. Since it sparks more than once at a time, it as well may be an issue with the sensor (wire).

It's a yes on both of those. [:o]

Where should I send the ignition? I bought it from Bob at Dl USA, but I read that he's not in the business anymore.

Thankyou for your help!

HillBilly, I've been reading as much on that plane as I can find. When I get mine I'll probably do a build thread on it. But it's going to be a winter project so it might be slow going.

RE: DL-50 engine

Ok. I just unpacked my edge. I am very impressed with the quality of the arf. There are some parts that are going in the trash.

1. The landing gear. ( to heavy)

2. All the hard wear. (Cheesy ARF) typical

3. The CA hinges. (Just cant build a 50cc with"em)

But other than that stuff it seems very nice. There's glue in all the joints and the wood is good. The only other concern I have is the flat stab/rudder. I'm debating weather or not to brace it. Not that big of a deal really...

For what this plane costs it is very worth it. It's very nice.

I just ordered a 55DLE from valleyview, will a 20oz tank be enough, does the 55 suck alot more gas than the 50 or is the difference minimal enoug not to bother getting a bigger tank?

A 16oz is all I use on my 50.

Don't bother :)
With my DL50 and 20oz tank I have the timer set at 15 minutes and have 1/4 to 1/3 tank left. So that's about 1oz/minute for 3D flight. With the DLE55 it might be 1.1oz or so :)

thanx guys, I will keep the 20oz,the plane and the engin still in the mail, cant wait to get it , good winter project
