Drill starters

In an attempt to figure out how to start my now-stubborn G-45 (see this thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_65...tm.htm#6616913 )

I started fooling around with the idea of using my 18v cordless drill to start the engine.
The drill itself has the poop to turn the engine over, although not very fast.

The real challenge with this hack-job approach of mine is that the rubber cone slips on the aluminum spinner a lot instead of gripping it and turning the engine over.
So I'm wondering if anyone else has figured out a cheap-o solution to this?

I'd use my drill all day long in lieu of shelling out big bucks for a high torque starter if I could just figure out how to get traction between the spinner and the rubber cone.

The larger size applies more grip than a standard cone.

Yeah, I just found that myself just now. ;)

The other thing about the larger diameter is that it has more leverage on the resistance from the engine compression. I didn't know they made one of these. Cool. [8D]

We need a whats the best cordless drill war. I vote Dewalt 14.4V Has to be a DLwalt drill out there by now.

I tried that, didn't work too well so I switched over to a real starter, it will start a 100cc if you wanted it to.( http://www.pacaeromodel.com/FieldEqu...rter/Stand.htm ) they have a new one now with 3 battery packs on the bottom.

You have to achieve a minimum RPM in order to generate a spark good enough to get the engine to run. If your RPM is to low, you will just be exercising the drill and piston.

I wish I could tell you the minimum RPM you have to achieve..........my 14.4volt won't turn fast enough to start my magneto ignition engines........thats 800RPM........so I know you have to have a drill that beats 800RPM.

Dick Bennett at B&B Hobbies could tell you..........or Ralgh Cunningham of RC Ignitions.

I use a Dewalt 18volt and it spins a 150 3w with ease I just bought a sullivan giant scale starter cone.

See, I had a hunch there were some DLwalt drills out there.

Also sounds like one of one hundred reasons to ditch the mag ignition.

Ahhh.....

The definitive solution, it'll run better too....;)

Ok, here's an idea...

Let's start a tach-ing contest to see who can get what drill to turn over some given motor the fastest.

;)

Tower has the oversized AL starter cone backordered for another couple of weeks, but the rubber insert is on the way.
One way or another, using my Torqemaster 90 OR my 18v drill, I'm going to get that cranky p.o.s. G-45 to light up.

WITHOUT more tendinitis in the elbow.
Stupid thing.

I'm a fastener Salesman we sell all the brands of tools so I tried them all the Dewalt has the most tq altho its not my favorite. It spins that 150 like nothing the small stuff is just a breeze, some years ago I tried this, at that time the biggest drill was a 14vot and they would not work but the 18 volt stuff does the job. The Makita 18 volt works also as does the the Milwaukee I didn't try the cheaper ones but I would expect them to not work as well. just my .02

What do you guys use in the chuck, a simple 3/8" bolt? Curious what you use for the shaft of the starter cone.

I bought the large cone and insert for my Torquemaster 180 and it will not spin my BME 44 or my 3W-50i, and BARELY spins my Saito 1.50. I borrowed a friend's Dynatron with the two sided handle, and it really spins the props. I'd go with a CH ignition or similar, or maybe a spring starter if you want to keep the magneto ignition. Good luck,
Sam

Yep I used a 3/8 grade 8 bolt I used a grade 5 at first but it broke the grade 8 seems to be holding up.

I use a Sears 19v cordless drill with the Sullivan Megatron cup and insert. Spins my G-62's without any problems;)
