What can go wrong..
with a spring starter on a G62. Was flying tonight I started her three times and flew. On the fourth attempt to start her (using the spring starter) there was a snap and no more spring starter. Took her apart and all seems to be OK. Put her back together and still no spring starter.
Any help would be appreciated. Tomorrow will try to hand start!! |

take it apart again. take the spring off. Put the hub on the crank. Turn it in one direction and lock up in the other. If it doesn't lock up wash it up with varsol or gas, regrease with white Lithium grease and try turning it again. If it still doesn't work the Sprague one way clutch is gone. Take it to a brg. supplier for replacement.

Will try it, but
do not have any bearing suppliers around here, that I know of???
Thanks for the reply. Will let you know. |

I had the starter fail on a G-38, with the same symptoms. On mine the sleeve that goes on the crankshaft had split and come loose. Had to buy a new sleeve. If you can turn your engine backwards indefinitely, and there was no prior warning - slipping or sometimes failing to engage - I'd be more inclined to suspect the sleeve than the sprag. But it could also be that the screw holding the end of the spring has fallen out. Bill. |
Nail on the head, Bill
you explained exactly how it happened and what it is doing now. No prior warning and can turn it back wards with no problem at all.
But the sleeve is all intact when I inspected it. Thanks Bill Can I still try to hand start with doing no damage to anything? Can I buy just the part I need or a whole new Spring starter? Thanks again guys. RORO |

RORO:
With the engine out where you can see the starter sleeve, turn the crank backwards and look closely at the back end. If your sleeve has split there will be a verry narrow line that doesn't turn with the crank. I had a H*** of a time finding it on mine, the split was almost invisible. Take the spring and sprag out, pop the mount off to get a really good look at the sleeve. Then put the sprag halfway on, so you can still see 1/3 of the sleeve. Put a dot on the sleeve with a magic marker. Now turn the sprag back and forth, holding the crank. If the dot moves and the crank does not... If you want to fly it with the spring starter not working, just leave the sprag and spring out. That way, whatever is wrong, you wont do any damage. Hope this helps. Bill. |
Thanks again
for the reply, will try to do that.
I need the spring starter left on as I think it will change my CG to much if I take it out (off)??!! RORO |
