SWEET!:D Thanks mate!!!

I've been using reed switches with my TCI module and they work well, but I've never tried to use a CDI or the like since I can't find documentation regarding the output levels of hall sensors so I could replace them for a reed.
One more thing: I've noticed you showed a CDI coil - do they work as good as a standard coil designed for TCI igntions?

BTW, the oil used for gasoline burns unlike the oil used for methanol. That's why it runs cleaner (albeit smokier?)

You may not able to imagine where the coil I used come from. This can give you clue. Coil is from this type of vehicle. We call it "Motorcycle" while American call "Scooter", I guess.

Some can use, while some product only spark when spark plug is outside the engine but not work with pressurize combustion. This apply to both TCI and CDI. We had to try some few coils in the market until found the match one. Anyway more chance to normal TCI coil.

Sorry jeff, I've not seen or ever touch zenoah engine. So I have no idea about it.

I would think it would work fine. I am using one with a CH CDI and it works great. It is on my Zenoah G26.

Of course, I think RC CDI and RC Coil would work, but my experiment is to try something that is different. By using coil from small commercial gas vehicle or house hold equipment open the chance to find easy and cheaper. Coils that my friend are using for this experiment costs only a few bucks per each. If we can find one that match then everybody can make his own ignition system for only about 20 bucks.
Here is the other one red coil that I think it gives the best performance and best match. Although it looks bigger than the last black one but its weight is only 50 gram more.

Its performance is great, not less than methanol.

We use a big size fuel filter just before carburetor to ensure smooth and always sufficient fuel run.

More show .... if correct timing and fuel adjustment this engine and ignition system is very sweet. It can be started very easy.

Update... We are desinging this simple ignition system with simple timing advance funtion. We'll experiment to find out how advance timing will effect to the performance and runing of small gas engine. Please stay tune.

Are those lion or li-poly packs your using to power the ignition and how much current are you using. Are you using any voltage regulator to drop the voltage down to 4.8-5 volts.

We use Li-Po 3 cells (11.1 V). But any kind of battery range from 10 to 12 volt would work. The system draws about 350 milliamp. No voltage regulator.

RE: DIY Ignition System - Most simple

Actually it is hard to measure current drawed by using digital amp meter because the current always swing up and down during cycle of engine runing. So we can only see runing number on the meter screen all the time which it is hard to read. This is unfortunately because we have only digital amp meter.

RE: DIY Ignition System - Most simple

Good news.. we had found the way to measure current drawed by using digital multimeter. By put 1 ohm resitor serial in the power supply circuit and measure voltage over that 1 ohm resister, instead of direct meaure ampere. And here the result.
It draws 366 mA at 1500 rpm idle and less than 200 mA at top speed. Top speed draws current less than idle. Strange??? yes..thanks buck1856 to ask this question.

I passed by the electronics shop today and bought the components for the "Patxipt" version of your ignition.
I'm still confused about the schematic, the 1 Ohm resistor seems to be superfluous (only to measure current?)and the coil secondary ground should be connected to the primary ground.
Photos of my module follow as attachments. Will try to test this week on the bench.
The connector next to the 7805 voltage regulator has the same pinout as a servo lead, Ground-Vcc-Signal. I also replaced the 7555 for a NE555 IC, since the former wasn't available.

:DDear Bbuldoc,
Is the schematic at the beginning of the thread the final schematic diagram or has it changed. Is the PCB layout available?

The small coils you use, from what motorcycle did you obtain them?
Thanks for all the effort.

Dear Patxip,
1 Ohm Resister is current limiter not only to measure the current.
I attached a photo how to wire the coil. If you can only find a coil that has common ground for primary and secondary from the factory then you can consider wire the coil as shown in the photo, either way should work. But keep in mind, this wiring won't work if one size of ignition contact go to engine case (ground). You have to isolate engine ground and ignition circuit ground. Good luck and any success or question please let me know.

It is the final for simple one that without timing advance. We are trying to add some passive component to enable simple timing advance to this circuit. If you want timing advance I would recommend to wait for a day. Anyway I attached here the PCB layout and the photo of motorcycle that we use its coil. (Suzuki Akira)
