Giant 20' span experiment
 

I'm building a 20' wingspan Cessna 162 out of spruce. I have no idea if this thing will ever leave the ground.

I have the wings 80% finished and will post some pics in a couple weeks when I get the fuselage framed up. I just took a smaller plane and scaled it up with a few changes here and there. I'm more or less just enjoying building it.

Anyway.. are there any cheap weedeater 2 cycle engine mod plans on the net? I want to be cheap on the engine because firstly, I doubt this will get airborne and secondly, I don't think it will fly a second time.

Also, what is the best material to cover this thing with? The ribs are spaced about 1 foot apart. I wanted to use roll aluminum for added realism, but that would probably get banged up before even leaving the ground. The ribs are 1/4" plywood so it might be difficult to fasten the aluminum without something else attached to the ribs.

One last question... I'm going to have a problem with the cowling. I have no experience with fiberglass. Would someone be willing to make a cowling about 2.5' in diameter? $$$

Sounds like a pretty cool sort of project and I wish you the best of luck with it.

I think that will need something bigger than a weedeater engine. I would guess a conversion of some sort of small motorcycle or industrial engine would be more in order.

When you consider that the full size is only a 30 ft Span, uses 100hp and has an empty weight of 830 lbs - I'm guessing that your model is going to be needing in excess of 20 hp to get airborne with any hope of success in keeping it there.

Don't know about the covering.

I hope that your field is long and in a very clear area without people around.

This one pops up all the time -and I bet some guys figure a scale up "should work"

actually , structurally , things quickly get waaaaaaay out of hand- The model could easily collapse
But if for the sake of going along with the gag - the structure is fine -- the power needed can proove to be a real problem.
The guys who have spent time dealing with the development of RPV projects will have a LOT of info about this aspect of the project
A friend here - flies these things for various outfits --professionally
Some of them were really turkeys and took almost all the visible runway to get into the air .
Some time researching the entire project before any work is done -is well spent.

If it didn't have NATO permission it would get blown out of the sky as soon as it was seen. And it would be seen. Don't ask how I know.

For a motor you would probably need something like the Powered Paragliders use,maybe less,maybe more ?

I did see a 22 foot electric made out of pink fan fold foam not the best color but it did fly just fine
