Ign module fastening
 

I've got enough room to put the ign mod on the outside surface of the firewall, next to the engine standoffs. How do I fasten it to the firewall?

It has 2 screw tabs, but the instructions, (Fuji), and common sense tell me to mount it on foam. Should I put it on a bed of foam and loosely attach the screws? I would think that would make things worse.

Suggestions?

Do not mount with the two holes, If you have a mishap it will brake the ignition, I mount mine with velcro and drill two hole in the plywood, Put pull ties to hold in place.

I don't quite understand. Do the ties hold the velcro to the firewall? Do you glue one part of the velcro to the module?

It is a two part velcro, One on the ignition one on the firewall, Then drill two holes in fire wall next to the ignition and put a pull tie around it.

I thought you have to put some sort of foam between the Module and Firwall to reduce Vibration, the method you describe, places the Module Directly against the Firewall; I would agree with the Zip/Pull Ties, instead of the Velcro a piece of Foam; then pull the ties snug and that would hold the Module in place, and the foam to dampen the vibration, I hope this is correct?

I must have taken a dumb pill today, sorry.

Do I glue "part 1" of the velcro to the module and "part 2" is held to the FW with the zip-tie? Then stick the velcro together?

or

Glue one side of the whole velcro "sandwich" to the module and hold the whole thing to the FW with the zip-tie, (no glueing the velcro to the FW)?

Better still is you use some foam between the two pieces of velcro to help cushion things a bit more. I do this frequently but only use the "hook" part of the velcro to better grab the foam. By itself velcro will isolate from vibration fairly well, but once you pull a zip tie tight the ignition box is pretty much directly against the wood and absorbing a lot of vibration, velcro or no. I agree about the mounting lugs. I tried that just once with one of the new type ignitions and the mounting lugs lasted maybe 2 flights. It may have failed on the first but I didn't look until after the second. Fortunately I used a zip tie as well since I did not trust the lugs.

Even better would be to use the velcro and foam between the box and the firewall, then use velcro to wrap around the box, securing all, but that would take a fair sized cut in the wood to pass the velcro.

I have first gas engine, Zenoah EI, that the manual says to not mount the ignition unit with bottom side directly to plane. It recommends to use a stand off for attachment.
Also do not wrap in foam, cloth, etc. Apparently to allow cooling. Temps could get to 70-80 Deg C.
Seems like a velcro stand off and zip tie would work fine. I might try that.

Little rubber isolation mounts on the ignition lugs, lasted ten flights so far, you could make some if they are difficult to find, out of silicon mastic and bolts into blind T nuts and cast in a tube, leave for at least four days before disturbing.

You must have a 3w style. CH has no mounting lugs, RC Exl has one at each end. Falkon isn't worth mentioning.

I can't speak for the other ignitions but my C-H doesn't even change temp no matter how long you run it. I pulled it out of the foam the first couple of times I ran it to check the temp and even after 30 mins of run time it is no warmer than ambient. I guess all that power the Zenoah ign. is using is making bunches of heat.

They'll go a heck of a lot longer than 30 minutes without heating up. They've crossed the Atlantic non stop so figure they do all right.

I use RTV silicon.Sand the back of the box and the place you want to put it and use a good bit of the silicon and forget about it.The silcon cushins it and if you need to remove it just work an exacto knife behind it and you can pull it off.
