New ignition

There is a new ignition advertized on hobbycity.com for $25. Does anyone know anything about this?

wow to that price

Is it the blue unit? CH states it's not well shielded.

RE: New ignition

How about a 26cc EI engine for $169?
I suspect the shielding should be good for use on 2.4 GHZ

cheap reigns.

That's sad because you mostly get what you pay for. (Not always, there are some bargains to be had, but mostly.) I still put a premium on quality (both product and service) and that's why all of my ignitions are the real deal CH.

So far the comments have been either hearsay or a well worn cliche.
Has anyone had one or tried it?

I don't consider Bill's opinion at CH hearsay although I can see where others might. If he says something is questionable I trust him.

And that's because it's not a $25 blue ignition....An RC EXL Chinese clone of a C&H is pretty hard to hide, even with black spiral wrap on the wires....:D

But you are saying that is what he said. That is hearsay from you.
I am interested in hearing from someone that has bought one and tried it.
Most of our ARF's are Chinese made. They do an excellent job that you would not be able to afford if they were made in the US.
I have a lot of chinese made electronics that are of excellent quality and cost less tha 1/2 of those made in the US or Europe.
I just bought a 100 amp (44V) ESC made in China. It has Fairchild HV FETs apparently because China don't have HV FET's. Its first quality and cost less tha $100.
As I said I am interested in hearing from someone that has bought one and tried it.

You are welcome to do as you please sir but in the future please don't accuse me of hearsay as I am not the one who referred back to CH in this thread stating the blue units were not well shielded. I also wish to assure you that just because you say something first hand about your purchases of Chinese merchandise doesn't make me believe it is good.

I also take offense to you guessing as to what I might be able to afford so maybe I better not frequent this thread until the mods have a chance to get things in order.

THe rcexl ignitions if purchased in bulk cost about $25.00. Tell them you are an engine manufacturer like Sissa Aircraft on Ebay and buy direct from China. Has the CH US distributorship stopped this?

db,

I have relayed what CH told me about this ignition, it is not in a metalized case and therefore rf can be a problem. Why don't YOU buy one and let us know how it performs.

I ordered one and it should be here late this week or early next week. I plan to use it on a Homelite weedeater conversion. I'll post what I find in a week or so.

Dirtybird,

Buy one yourself and pass on the experiences. Why have somebody else do it? The most you'll be out is $25.00.

I bought one some months ago, and put it on my 40cc Sthil conversion. It seems to work OK, but i guess the lack of shielding can be a problem in some setups.
It makes a good spark, and seems to work fine, but i have not done much testing yet , i just cheked my engine will start and run.
It seems it lacks control of timing, i can not see any microcontroller inside.
The electronics inside is mostly covered with some black epoxy, so there can be components not visible..

When you "pot" an ignition problems arise with heat retention and early failure. More potting, greater heat problems. Exactly why 3w ignitions require lots of cooling air.

What does "potting" Mean?

They tell me it takes up to 6 weeks to get it. I thought someone might have one.
BTW do you have one? If not just why are you in this thread?
Why can't I ask a simple question without getting a lot of unrelated comments?

I tried to get the rcexi ignition but the manufacturer wouldn't sell to me. He said to go to CH.
I would buy one but I don't expect to be here for the six weeks it takes to get it.
As for the metalized case you can get one from Radio Shack for less than $5.
You probably wouldn't need one if you are on 2.4ghz

Call Ralph at RC Ignitions for an RC Xcl. Wild Hare handles them too. You might even be able to find one at BME.

Potting is when they cover up an electrical component with some form of epoxy.

I received my "blue ignition" from HobbyCity today - 11 days after ordering. The plastic case has "XYZ CDI" molded on the top. It's probably the same one that comes with XYZ engines. Now I have to get it installed and do some testing. :)
