BME 58 Extreme
 

Looks like I'm finally going to get a BME 58 engine after paying and waiting almost a year while Keith gave up and the new owners took over. It is supposed to arrive in the next few days.

I've emailed Andy at BME about a muffler for the engine and thought I would ask here too while waiting for his reply. What would be some options for a muffler in a Great Planes 27% Yak? What Hitec servos would you recommend?

I would also like to say that Andy has been very understanding and seems to be going to honor all previous deals that Keith had.

You're going to be the first so it might be hard getting experienced answers....

Do a full blown tuned exhaust on the puppy and lets see how it does!
Wait a minute, did you say 27% Yak? Somewhere around 76" span? and you are putting a 58cc engine in it? Yikes!
So far AI is the only place other than palces like Macs to get exhaust flanges for BME.
Andy should have Keiths stock of mufflers by now and the 50ccBME exhaust will fit right to it. Kinda loud, kinda power robbing and guarranteed to blow exhaust slime all over your nice new plane but easy to install.

Just think, if it hadn't been for the tiny amount of oil residue you got from a 100-1 mix you would have never come up with your Bud can mufflers:)[)]

BME has mufflers in stock . The mufflers from the BME 50 will fit.

It might be a reduced amount using 100 to 1 mix but it seems 100% of it finds a way to land on the plane[X(]

Why is it mine don't get as much as yours and I only use a 50-1 mix and pitts mufflers????[)]

Pat and Guy.......you two always seem to be up to date on the "going on's" at BME.........is this 58cc motor getting ready for the mass public?

I will post some pics when it arrives. Andy Snow emailed me back and said that they were going to make mufflers for it. As mentioned in a above post, I would think the BME 50 muffler would work. I didn't know if there was a standard bolt pattern or a couple of patterns among the different engines as was curious what different mufflers would work with a BME.

I feel bad, guys. I have one of the first ten, but I won't get it on a plane to run it for at least 3-4 months. I would let it go if someone can use it before then.

Got to run a friends new BME 58 last night for the first time and I was impressed by the smoothness of the engine. We did not have the wings or canopy on and the vibration on the airframe was minimal. It only took about 5 flips with the choke on to pop, then it fired right up. The motor sounded very healthy on a 23 X 8 prop. It has to go through the break in procedure on the ground, so RPM and thrust numbers will come soon. I think this one is going to be a keeper!!

I would not do any break in procedure on the ground, you are wasting flying time and might do more harm than good. Adjust the needles and put it in the air. After a few tanks of gas (gallon or two) the rings will be seated

I've always brought my new engines up to temp, shut them off to completeley cool, then bring them up to temp again " at normal idle". I do this about 10 times before I repeat the process using a variable throtle. I've always had excellent results with this process on any ringed engine, glow or gas.

That should be fine, the reason I mentioned not to do any break in procedure is because I have seen more than one engine get cooked breaking it in on the ground by someone that did not know what they were doing. Seems like you have a handle on it.

Got some numbers on my friends 58. He is running a 3W 23 X 8 prop and its turning just over 7000rpm and is pulling 24 to 25 pounds thrust. The motor is still running break in fuel and we over 5000 feet above sea level.

Have you flown the plane yet? I would like to know how the bottom end power and transition is more than top rpm. Since it has the same porting as the 115 it will be interesting to see how the low end is.

Has not flown yet. He is up fishing over the holiday weekend. Should get a test flight in next week.

The BME-58 has arrived and I have it mounted and have loaded vid on the tube to show this deal. I have not flown this motor and this is the 1st start up this evening. I tried to show the idle and top RPM for the quick run on a 23A Vess. I have not touched the needles and will take care of that issue when I start flying it. I also tried to show how much the plane is moving for those who will ask how smooth or not smooth the motor is, to me it was smooth. The needles will be accessed from the bottom of the cowl by the way the carb is mounted. For those who need to know how the mid-range and things are again I did not fly. There is not a concern with another motors for me as far as RPM goes I figured I needed 7k in my head on a 23A on the ground. I have to hold all (tach and radio so it’s a fumble bumble deal) the motor base is very small looks like an OS on gas. It seems like something a female would say “oh that small but cute.” I have never heard that comment from a female lol…..Here are some of the pics I snapped.
