Ignition question?
 

I have bought a Evolution 45GX engine and have a question. When i turn the switch on i get the Firing of the plug that clears the cylinder but if i turn the prop i do not get a spark. Any help!!??

Thats my thought also but i had hope something else in that i don't think you can buy just the hall sensor!

That is not foolish! I may be the foolish one here!!:) Is that required to flip it fast?? I thought that as long as the Magnets on the crank went by the hall sensor it would fire. It does have two magnets but that should be for the timing advance!

Dunno about Evolution but my DA manual specifically says the Electronic ignition will not fire unless it is flipped at "operating speed" I think is how they worded it. Basically for safety so it doesn't fire when you don't want and when you do your hand should be moving fast enough to swing clear of the prop if it starts.

Have you tried to run it yet, I think I read somewhere that it had to turn fast or they would not fire. Take out the plug and install cap and turn with a starter and see if you get fire.

The question becomes, what brand ignition are we talking about here ? If a CH or RcExcell it will fire ever time the magnet passes the sensor at any speed.

I have no idea what kind ignition it has i just has the 2nd generation ICU that Evo uses the 2 cell lipo.

If you turn the other magnet also along the hallsensor I think it wil fire. You must make a full rotation with the prop.

With a Hall sensor system you do not have to flip it fast to make it work.
If it sparks when you turn it on and not when you wurn the prop over the Hall sensor is likely bad.

If the link above is for your ignition it say's from 4.8 to 6 volts

The electronic ignition unit requires a 4.8–6 volt battery source separate from your model’s radio system

2 cell lipo fully charged is 8.4 volts ????

It has the ICU S 6-8.4 volt ignition. It is suppose to run off a 2 cell lipo. And it is either the hall sensor or the ICU itself. I got home from the base today and tried it with a starter and no spark what so ever.

I have an Evolution 26 that is in the same state as yours, it only fires once and then it will not fire again until you switch it off and then on again.

Did you ever diagnose the problem, was it the hall sensor or the unit itself??

Bound I ended up testing it the same way that i do automotive hall sensors and it came up bad. I do not know if the ICU itself is also bad but after talking to some guys and the service guys at horizon i came to the conclution that if the unit fires when powered up then the ICU is good. The bad thing is that the hall sensor is not buyable by itself.[:o]

That sure is a bad design if you cannot replace the Hall sensor alone.
I would replace it with one of CH's Chinese units.

Dirtybird i know that it is a bad design that you cannot get the hall sensor by itself and as far as replacing with a CH chinese unit I have a bcma 40 and I thought of that but the Evo has 2 magnets on the prop drive and the bcma has 1. I would have the icu trying to fire twice...:eek:

Jfeenin i do hope that it is repairable by horizon or they have some fix because a new one is 250. for that price it would almost be worth trying to get a new motor from a lower manufacture. I could even get a 50cc. :D Although the EVO are brutes!

It would have to be the sensor pickup part right? Since the embedded magnets are simply fixed magnets. If you just changed the pickup and got the wiring right why wouldn't another pickup sensor work with the Stock ICU? It's the ICU that either expects one or two pulses per rotation, so if you just change the sensor (assuming it's the right sensitivity but they should all be similar) it would seem it should work.

Yes the ICU is the one that sees the 2 magnets that pass the sensor and uses the first to time the second and yes that would work if i could find a sensor for a reasonable price. Most that i have seen are 3 wire deals.

yes but I'd bet only two have any continuity between them...
