Ignition

Anyone used these ignition systems? http://www.syssaaircraft.com/gas_engine_ignitions.html Ignition module died on my Evolution .26gt, looking to replace it with this system due to being way cheaper than the conversion thru Horizon.

Another option for you, Ralph Cunningham 928 635 2455, I doubt you'll find a better price on a very good ignition and Ralph is a good man to do business with. www.DLUSA.net will get you an rcexl ignition for 80 bucks, had good luck with those. The guys at CH ignitions are certainly another good choice. Give Ralph a call though...before doing anything else.

All of the above ignitions are from the same company. C & H, BCMA and Ralf C are all useing the same rcexl ignition as the DL. C & H puts there sticker on it, and say it is custom made for them, but it appears to be the same exact thing to me.:D It says RCEXL on it, but he gets $100.00 instead of the $80-90 that other guys are charging. I went with C & h because of there reputation for years.:D

I might be wrong but if you use one of these you will have to retime your engine, No big deal and will cost you a lot less than a new original ignition.

Hobbycity sells an automatic advance unit for $25.
This is the ignition used for the XYZ engines. There is a thread on XYZ engines. I don't see anyone saying the ignition is bad.

Just bolting on a CH RCXL or anybodys RCXL will make for an engine that is way out of time and will run poorly.
The CH conversion kit is 104.95 and included a new prop hub with a retimed keyway
FFIW
CH sells the CH RCXL ignition single for 79.95 not 100. AND the timing chip and plug wire our to our specs

QUESTION....Is there 2 versions of the RCXL ignition? One without auto advance and one with auto advance? The photo below....is this the same ignition you are selling? Thanks Capt,n

All the RCXL ignitions are auto advance. Except for a few we did for R&D
The unit in the picture is NOT what CH sells.

Hi There

I have been talking back and forth with Todd at SYSS since I read this thread and He is telling me that all that needs to be done to mount this on the evolution 26 is to ensure that you remove one magnet off the hub and leave the other that is timed at 28degrees from TDC on the engine hub. Then change the hall sensor on the new ignition for the one on your existing ignition ( must have something to do with the magnets???)

I have an older evolution 26gt that only has one magnet on the hub does this mean that the RCexl ignition will bolt right onto the engine that i have?

I have the same version. Was hoping the ignition would've arrived today but no such luck. Oh well maybe tomorrow.

Ok here is the update. Original hall sensor would not work so installed the ignition sytem as supplied. new sensor is longer so had to move it back a little. installed in original position timing is off a bit. Does not run anywhere near as terrible as tkg has indicated. Once started runs good. Just will not hand start till the timing is reset. May wait for tkg to make the hall sensor mount available seperate instead of modifying. Nice clean looking setup he now has available.

MY TAKE: I hear that some systems use the 2 magnets for ignition advance. So I would assume that with one magnet you will get no advance....which is ok on most 33cc and smaller engines. Set at 28 degrees BTDC and forget it. Capt,n

Did you ever use the same ignition on any engine...and did it run? Capt,n

Ok, now if you mounted the new sensor in the same place as the original one you are trying to start the engine at about 25 degs after top dead center and if you could get it to run wide open you would only be about 2-3 degs before top dead center.

Status: offline Thanks for the comments guys. It too expect it to run just fine. It's going to rain all weekend in Chicagoland, so I probably won't run it until Monday.

I have an Enya 46-4C that runs well with a CH ignition and methanol or E85. Even with all of the extra weight compared to glow it flew a Superstar 40 very well. The RCEXL seems to have a stronger spark on one LiPo cell. Spark ignition is fun in this size. The Enya was so easy to start. If you are familiar with their carbs, they have a choke where you pull the throttle barrel out. I'd pull the choke, give it a couple flips by hand and it would fire right up. Close the choke, and it was ready to go. This was as close to the gasser experience as you could get. I don't run gas. My biggest airplane is an Ultra Stik Lite, and it's electric....for now. I have an NIB FS-200 an another ignition.
