Some of us old geezers LIKE noise :D

yeah, but what do you do when the engine is DESIGNED for a "quiet system", and makes 400-500 more rpm with a nice silent tuned system??

I really doubt you'd complain about the known power loss, would you?

This old geezer likes quiet engines -
When we were running pipe tests Tuesday - it was interesting to note that the setup which spun the biggest prop - the hardest - also had the best throttle response and-- was almost the quietest .
I do like small block Chevs that turn 8000 and Suzuki bikes that zing to wild revs - but noisy models just for noise sake - nope

Believe me, I love loud high performance engines and supersonic props, but we are losing flying fields at an alarming rate. We must diligently pursue quiet set-ups if this hobby is to continue to grow and prosper.

And that is what makes me mad... people cant stand the noise of a airplane thats as loud as any weed wacker or blower or any home utility appliance.

If the models were on the ground - the noise would not be an issue.
We share a big wetlands with a off road training course and one can hear the bikes and 4 wheelers- only occasionally
A 150 tho -on in cowl "mufflers"
and a 32x10 prop - puts out noise which can be heard for MILES!
This is not idle talk - The in air noise IS an issue.

I once used an AM 33-11 two blade on my Twin Spark 3W150, with pefa Canisters, and JUST to convince the Executive council of my flying club that noise WAS in issue, I did a demonstration takeoff for them.

I started at the right end of the runway, and just nailed the throttle. the 42 lbs DR109 was off the ground in 10 feet, ripping the prop as it passed center runway at an altitude of 5 feet, then I went about a quarter mile and did a downwind turn, still maintaining about 10 feet of altitude and headed down the back straightaway of the pattern. The prop was SOO loud that everyone on the committee was yelling at me to shut her down. I brought the engine back to idle, coasted in and landed, and for the next minute you could hear the props scream echoing off all the treelines more than a mile away, and the one directly behind the runway. . over and over again.

I never used that prop again, and at the next club meeting we had a unanimous vote to follow the IMAC noise regulations being proposed at that time, and to prohibit intentional prop ripping. Our field has been, and will continue to be, very quiet since that time.

Ah noise control. Reminds me of an idiot Chicago Alderman (Burton Nataros) who tried to pass an ordinance in the City Hall to ban motorcycles from his neighborhood after dark. He didn't like the sound of wailing open pipes. It didn't pass. There's already laws on the book that say your vehicle (any vehicle) has to have a working muffler.

That's okay. . only so much conjecturing you can do on the Xtreme until it gets here. . and after they start flying, there will be nothing but arguing. . .

Kris, any news on the 4 cylinder BME is working on?

They are Tim D. you just dont know it yet. Our high altitude test guy is getting as much as 600 rpm more than one of your favorite brand X engines at his field on the same exact prop. Both running stock mufflers and the BME is two lbs lighter. I can tell by his voice on the phone that his grin is way bigger than your smiley face on your post. :D :D

when is it due?

Keith,

Do u have any idea when the 110 will ship or when your dealers will have it?

I'm in the market for a 100cc right now and yours would be my choice if it was available.

Thanks

Mike

Say Keith:
What do you expect the minimum performance of the Extreme to be with in-cowl mufflers and a Menz-S 27x10 prop?

BME 07-18-2003 08:07 PM

BME Xtreme update

Diablo, I haven't tested the Menz 27x10 but a MCS 27x10 which is a heavier load is turning 6300-6400. The Mejzlik 28x10 is turning 6700 and a 26x10 menz is turning 7100. This is on stock mufflers and and a new non broken-in engine. This engine is designed for tuned exhaust with a exhaust port duration of 170 degrees.

I may want to be on the list for the 55 also. Can you tell me what you anticipate selling the 55 for?

All we need from you to add you to the list is your phone number and your patience with us. We are behind schedule for these engines but they will be well worth the wait. We plane on selling the 55X for 579.00.
