Saito FG-20 or 21

I got my new FG-20 today and ran it on the test stand. I used Honda HP2 at 20:1 like it calls for. Crank right up and ran well. I ran it for about 45 minutes. When I pulled the exhaust pipe off and looked in the head there seemed to be allot of carbon build up on the exhaust valve. Is this normal for a Saito? Also there was carbon build up in the exhaust pipe. Anyone know how normal this is? Check out the video of it running. Seem like a pretty nice engine. Going to mount it on a Funtana X100.

that is strong on a 16 x 8 prop as i would only be doing lower pitch for my needs on a motor like this for the deal so that is doing well to me. I recall my satio 180 doing just a tiny bit more on a 10% nitro and that was on high $ glow fuel..... this should really be the ticket if the price comes down of which i am not expecting.......:)

Very nice engine. I'm equally interested in that fine Italian marble engine stand.

Hey Guys, Made a mistake in my video. The prop is a 16X 6 APC. Sorry [&o]

I would be interested to hear about the flight performance. I want to put one of these in my 1/4 scale Cub if it does well.

I wish Saito would come out with a 180 gas version.

Well guys, I emailed the Saito guys and asked for a 91 four stroke gas burner and I just casualy mentioned it to the people I fly with and they are all willing to purchase them. Two of the guys have the FG-36 and love them. I can't wait to try my FG-20 and am waiting for it be delivered.

Sailfish,

The FG-36 is pretty close to the 180. I have owned two of them and they both liked fuel a lot.

I recently purchased the Saito FG 20 and will put it into a Seagull Yak 54 .90 size. Seems like this will be a good combo. This has been my dream plane for some time now but won't get the Yak until mid April. This will also be my first gasser so I am pretty excited. Anyone know of others running the FG 20 in the Seagull Yak .90 size?

I am going to put my FG-20 into my old Spacewalker which right now has a Saito 100 in it. I thought it might make a good test platform for both the FG-20 and a new JR 12 channel radio. The bird is a floater with the 100 in it and I have a ton of lead in the nose of the plane. In fact I built a special box just to hold the weight.

rmalko,

my friend has the seagull Yak54 90 size, and he has got a magnum 91 4 stroke engine on it.
I recently put the plane thru its paces, and with magnum .91 spinning a 14x6 prop at around 9600 RPM,
it will barely hover at 90% throttle and has nearly no power to pull out.
This is a very heavy plane, and with magnum in front, its tail heavy.

A saito FG20 might give it the reserve power for hover pull out, but still dont expect unlimited 3D capability from this plane. Its a good sport flier IMO.

LiQuid TR,

Thanks for the info. I will post back here when I get my Yak in the air and see what it can do. I will be alright with a sport flyer and 3G would be a plus. I have read the FG 20 is supposed to be about 5% less power than the Saito 125.

Does anybody know if the Top Flight AT-6 Texan would handle the Saito FG-20? I would love to buy the bird but I would also like to put the gas burner in it. It has a 730 sq in wing area and is supposed to weight between 8.5-9.5 lbs. I do have other Saito engines in my shop that I could put in it and I even have a YS-110 that is free of a airframe right now.

I read somewhere on this site were there was a calculator for estimating just this kind of thing but I forgot where I seen it. It must be the old farts desease setting in.

Les,

I believe the FG 20 would be more than enough power. The specs on the AT-6 Texan you are talking about suggests 4-stroke .70-.91 cu in (11.5-15 cc) engine. The FG-20 is a 20cc gas so it should be a good match.

The FG 20 is rather small on the outside for a 125. It is more like a big 90 on the outside.
<div id="prodImages">http://www.horizonhobby.com/ProdInfo...AIEG20-250.jpg</div>
The 125 glow will turn a APC 16-6 at 9000 so it has plenty of power if the need arises

What in the world is club saito? I should join as I have been sold on them for years now.

And thanks for the reply about the Top Flight bird with FG-20. I believe I am going to just buy it.

Well I should have my Funtana X100 ready to fly in the next few days. Just have to wait for a calm day. Has anyone got any of there FG 20 planes in the air yet? If so, Report?

Mine won't be in the air until May. I am getting the Seagull Yak 54 .90 mid April. Right now I am buying servos, batteries etc. I will post when it does fly. Hopefully I will have a video of it.

rmalko, I put a zenoah 20cc in a seagull yak 54 and was very unhappy with it. I sold it and bought a YS 140 for it. Have not got it installed yet but will report when I do. I have my new saito 20cc in a Funtana x100 and hope to fly it soon. On that Yak make sure you read all the post on it here. The CG in the instructions is incorrect. It needs to be moved back. Setup like they call for makes the plane tail heavy, pitch senitive, and very hard to fly.

Thanks for the tip Sailfish. Was the Yak the Seagull .90 size?

SailFish, the Zenoah is supposed to have 20% less power than the FG 20 and it is also heavier I think by 8-10 oz's. Maybe the Yak would have enough power with FG 20. I did read about the CG being off where the manufacturer suggests. I was planning on finding the true CG for it. I might look around at similar planes that will be good with my engine. I saw your video with the engine on the stand - not many videos out there with this engine.

I disagree. The zenoah G20 turns a 16x6 apc at 9300rpm whereas the fg20 turns the same prop at around 8600rpm. The zenoah is a few ounces heavier though.

RE: Saito FG-20 or 21

If you ask me to justify the purchase of this engine,I seriously can't.After having used and operated it, I find that it is a zero sum game. The cost of the engine is rather high, coupled with the higher maintenance required i.e adequate lubrication and heat issues ,additional weight and extra wiring vs the fuel savings , it just doesn't add up.The fg36 for that capacity is fine but i think anything lower becomes a novelty.
You just can't afford to fling the plane about with nary a care as the cost of damage repair is rather high. The pump assembly alone will set you back more than 100 bucks and I seriously don't know how long the pump will last and it is not serviceable.A cheap chinese two stroke at a fraction of the cost would give you more courage! just my 2 cents.
