Walbro vs Tillotson
I have the Tillotson carb that came with my old 3W70B2 twin, and was told that if i switched to a "modern" Walbro carb that i could gain some, is this true?
I believe it is the same bolt pattern so it should fit with out any issue |

I am not sure but I would like to hear the answer to this one. |
RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
If you have the correct carb for the engine it won't matter which type you have. Both are altitude self compensating, with the Walbro generally being slightly easier to tune. Both will tune nicely but the Tillotsen is more sensitive to needle movement.
Just consult both web sites to obtain a carb intended for the engine displacement. |
RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
What Tired Old Man said, either will work well.

ok thanks TOM, ill just stay with the Tillotson that my engine came with

RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
I've always been curious about Tillotson carbs. I've actually never seen one. But I've heard several guys refer to them as TOILETSON .. I guess toilet is how they feel about these carbs. The general consensus from all these different guys over the years was that Tillotson carbs are finicky and basically suck.
And then I've had 2 REALLY good engine guys tell me the Tillotson is a MUCH MUCH MUCH more accurate fuel metering device. They are more complicated than a Walbro, but supposedly they are WAY better at metering and atomizing fuel. Curiosity got the better of me and I started reading exploded diagrams, rebuild articles and all info I could find on the Tillotson. They APPEAR to be more complicated, but as I said... never actually seen one or tuned one. So, whats the deal? Is the Tillotson better? Or basically the same as a Walbro? Or does Toiletson really sum it up the best? [sm=confused.gif] Ford? Chevy? |
RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
At a glance and with few exceptions, you'd never know the Tillotson wasn't a Walbro. I had one on a 3W engine once and fiddled with quite a few on other non-RC engines back in the day. They always seemed to work just fine.

I have several DL/DA 50's with Walbro carbs and always struggle to get that midrange gurggling to go away, using stock mufflers. I have a DL 100 with Tillotson design EMS carb and noticed awesome midrange transition. That's my 2 cents

RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
Unfortunately there is as much difference in performance on same brand as between brands . On some Tillotsons tho - they use very long needles for low/hiigh adj and these can and will viberate badly at midrange on some engines
I saw these short and reslot them but in some other cases the venturii (or effective size of it ,makes a noticable difference in power . BUT again I run pipes on everything so I see the advantage of maximum or best match of flow |
RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
"Back/In/The/Day"..."Harley-Davidson" used a "Tillotson" with diaphragm metering, three adjustable circuits (low/med/high), and an accellerator pump....They did have fuel percolation issues from excessive heat transfer....Off/Topic I know!....

RE: Walbro vs Tillotson
I had one back then and it was a constant pita.

Perhaps not, but I had a 1945-45 c.i. and a 67 FLH.

Just jok'in....Sounds like I am a little older (71)....I too had a 1942 45ci flat/head....Got into flat/track racing in mid/50's....Worked for "Harley" at the Milwaukee location in mid-late 60's doing R&D at that time with the KR/45ci flat/head racing engine....& so it goes....(wow! am I off topic or what!)....
