Help choosing Engine for World Model Mustang GS.

Hi
I'm a newbie in gas engine. I only fly glow as of now.
Ihave a WorldModel Mustang GS and has below spec.

Wing Span : 80.5 in / 2040 mm
Wing Area : 1155 sq in / 74.5 sq dm
Flying Weight : 15.0 lbs / 6800 g
Fuselage Length : 70.5 in / 1790 mm
Engine Required : 2C 1.6 cu.in (glow) : 4C 1.8 cu.in (glow)

I'd like to havea reliable, inexpensive gas engine for my mustang and please recommend one please !
I'd like to do aerobatic flying so I need to oversize.

THanks.

Just remember that the WM Mustang was designed around a glow engine which have much smaller footprints than a gas engine large enough to do the job. You will not be able to avoid cutting up the cowl or moving things around that you would not be required to do with a glow engine.

A glow engine provides more power for it's size than a gas engine. Since most kits fly best with the larger end of the suggested engine sizes we'll start with the 1.8 4s. A 1.8 glow engine works out to about 29.49cc's. It weighs less than most of the gas engines in an equal size because of a need for an ignition and battery for a gas engine. Realistically, you will need something with about 35 to 40cc's in a gasser to get the power the plane needs that will also offset the increased weight of the engine. I'll let others make the product suggestions since I don't like getting into brand wars[8D]

DL 55, the rear carb will help with the narrow cowl, some what. Forget the glow. By the time you factor in twice as much fuel capacity (weight) for an engine like the Saito 1.80, the extra weight of the 55 is a wash. Not to mention that a Saito 1.80 brand new is $460.

Hi
Thank you for advice,

Isn't 52 oz engine too heavy for 15 lbs plane ?

That's the problem. Using a gas engine instead of a glow will always increase the weight. Your ony offset is in the amount of fue rquired for a flight. TYhe gas engine will use 1/2 to 2/3 the amount of fuel so you can run a smaller tank. Unfortunately the ignition, ignition battery, and the mass of the engine frequently offset, and then some, the weight of the reduced fuel load. You have to decide if the plane can handle the weight increase and still fly as well as it should. Not to many planes designed around using a 50cc engine that weigh less than 15.5 pounds, and generally a bit more.

To give you an idea of the way this plane is designed - I have one and am flying it with a super tiger 2300, which is a 1.4 cubic inch glow engine. this flies this plane VERY WELL and requires no tail weight. I use a master airscrew 17-8 scimitar prop which it turns about 8500 on the ground and in the air it unloads to much greater rpm - probably about 10k. A gas engine will weigh much more than this and will require tail weight.

This will give you an idea of the engine weight that just balances this plane with no added weight.
