Finding TDC and Timing Ignition Vedio

Here is a short vedio of how I find Top Dead Center and time a ignition at 28deg

I was a little stupid at one point and plugged the battery up wrong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SydZV...e=channel_page

Please take note

The way the video show for finding top dead center will work on most engines but the timing could be different for different ignitions.

The 28 deg timing methord will not work for DA, 3W, ZDZ and some of the others that the timing is set for around 3-5 mm before top dead center.

Bravo Milton, well done! That should help quitea few people. With your permision I'd like to saveit and use it to helpothers as the need arises.

Milton you should put this in the Nubie sticky thread at the top of the page that Bob had started. It would be a great addition.

Doug - In all honesty, I don't think a "gas newbie" ought to be mucking about with engine timing without some one-on-one help. I've seen folks get CW confused with CCW, and not realize there is a time lag in rotation between when the sensor starts detecting the magnet, and when the thing fires. I may be mistaken, but I think timing is more "advanced" gasser stuff....like tearing into the metering needle level in a Walbro.

Anyone *could* do it, but that doesn't mean anyone *should* do it. Just my .02

Milton - that is a wonderful vid...you should put it on your own website, for sure!!! I'll be downloading it to "keep". Well Done! And thank you!

Bob, good point about the different ignitions, going to edit my post to reflect this

Milton: Great video...very helpful. Wish I had it the first time I timed an engine.

Very interesting video.

However, from 0:45 to 1:11 the video freezes and all I got form Youtube is the audio.
The audio keeps running then the video & audio resumes after 1:11.

I guess is matter of Bandwidth.
I tried from 2 differnt PC.

Anyone having this problem while playing this video?

I like the sound of the mocking bird in the background

I don't have one of those gages, I use a caliper to find out the TDC, however takes me a while and multiple readings and a lot o patience.

The point of the video is that you don't need a fancy dial indicator

Just a homemade degree wheel and a homemade piston stop or you can just eyball it by feel if you are used to working on engines.

RE: Finding TDC and Timing Ignition Vedio

After doing this a number of times, you can also look through the exhaust port while at TDC. Watch for piston movement. There is a range of hub rotation where the piston isn't moving; the MIDDLE of that back and forth rotation is TDC. Milton calls it "rocking the piston", and it is extremely easy to get very accurate.

I had the freezing up, too. Maybe the file is damaged at You Tube.
I also agree that the background birds makes it a very pleasant video to listen to.

Sorry about the hesitation, I corrected it and reloaded the video and got the file size down from 118 MB to about 30 MB so it will be easier to download.

If you booked marked the old link in the first post I am going to delete that one from youtube, So book mark the new link in the first post for future reference.

For those like methat never haveused the "piston stop".
Could you show us a detail ofthis device?

I guess is a homemade device, is that right?
A sort of spark plug with an electrode removed?

Yes
I use a CM6 plug with a 1/4-20 bolt throught it for 10 mm plugs and a adapter from CM6 to standard plug for standard plug threads, any thing wil work, Just get a bolt that fits the plug threads and put a nut on it and lock the nut in place with some thin CA.

Some people use a wood dowel glued into a spark plug after the electrodes have been removed and drill a hole in the cenetr of the dowel so not to have any compression while rotating the crank
