What is this?????????

Hey Guys,

I wanted to check with everybody to see if I can figure out what type plane this is. I came across it in the local paper, and thought it was a steal for $50. The person I bought it from does not know what plane this is. I personally think it is a CAP-232, but I am more than likely wrong :)

Then engine is a KALT KG-22. Which I know nothing about, as this is my fist gasser. But no worries, I am not going to be flying this particular plane anytime soon. I plan on taking the engine off of this frame, and building a Ultra Stick for it.

So two questions:

1.) What plane is this???

2.) What information can I find on this engine, and any hints and tips you guys may have for it as well.

Oh and one other question, Will this engine be good enough for a Ultra Spad Stick?

Thanks,
Lonnie

The Kalt KG 22 is what is now the Zenoah G23. I will see if i can find an article of when the G23 was first reviewed and where they referred to it as basically the Kalt. As i remember, the only difference was that the prop shaft length was different. Since the prop shaft is actually threaded into the crankshaft, like the K&Bs, changing its length is no big thing, only the thrreaded prop shaft rod and the prop hub need to be different. You indeed have made a good deal at $50 for both plane and engine, as long as both are servicable.

Closer to a Cap 10. Be fun to fly. Responsive considering the size of the ailerons but fairly mild mannered.

Thanks Space and Tired ol'Man lol

Would Fiberglass specialties be a good source for a canopy and Cowl?? The one that is currently on there for one is falling apart, plus it is just a bit too long with that engine.

I hope to try and start it up in the next few weeks.

What would be a good mix for this engine? 20:1 or 25:1??

At an AUW of approximately 9.5 lbs and 1,500 sq. in. of wing area your 22cc engine should fly the USS quite okay. Any quality 2 stroke oil for air cooled engines mixed at between 32 and 40:1 will be okay.

You might almost be able to use a canopy from a Four Star 120 or a 25-27% Extra. The cowl is something you're going to have to play with to find the one you want. It'll take some measuring and comparing. You might end up to the same size Extra or Cap cowls from old Midwest kits.

It looks like a sorta CAP 21, thats the one called a Snappy CAPpy. Don't get low and slow until you have things figured out. Do your stall checks 3 mistakes high

Some of these parts may fit. Scroll down to "Garmhausen". Might be worth a shot. http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/cowlplan.htm

It does look like a CAP 21 from the front position of the wing to the fuselage, but the engine cowl is not correct.

The KALT22 is quite old but if taken care of is a very reliable engine. One thing to note, the KALT is a magneto, points and condenser setup. Be careful that you do not over tighten the prop nut, the prop stud is a lightweight, breaks easily.

Antique, Is this engine in the photo about the same? It too has points & is like in new shape yet. I bought a new weed wacker that it was on, years ago. Capt,n

Hey guys,

I just wanted to say thanks for all the help you guys give to us newbies lol.

No one other question about this engine. What type of kill switch you I put on it? There are two wires coming from the engine now. One is a ground, the other looks like it is attached to the points.

Man, that's a name going back a ways. Kioritz were among some of the first engines used in conversions because of their availibity and reliability. Haven't seen one in a long, long time.

Here is a copy of the 1989 MAN article review of the early G23 with points. My G23 had been converted to electronic CDI when I got it and I am very pleased. I have it on a Sig 1/4 scale J3 Cub. I use Coleman camp fuel and Pennzoil outdoor 2 stroke brown label at 32:1. Others will argue against the Coleman fuel, but it works very well for me and does not smell like gasoline.

Sorry, the color photo of the engine in my last post is not a G23 and should not have been attached.

Sincerely,

Richard

Cap, Very similar, these run very well and forever. The points on these are gapped very close, very small dwell time, don't gap them too wide.

Thanks for the reply. I got this engine in the house where it is warm & dry. I keep it oiled up good and turn it over about once a month like I do with all my engines. I may take that very heavy flywheel off and place a CD ignition on it. Just too darn many projects going. Also we want to get away from this cold...it makes my body ache to much. Take Care, Cap Happy New Year!

The Zenoah G23 is actually a Komatsu Zenoah engine, as is the Kalt branded version.

The model appears to be a rendition of the CAP 21, but whose rendition it is I do not know.

A very loose rendition, but one just the same.
