RCU Forums - break in question

My DL50 has had two oils run in it since new about 1 1/2 yrs ago. It usually gets around 3 to 4 hrs of runtime per week and maybe a bit more when there are big events around town. It was broken in on Pennzoil and ran on it for the better part of the first year. I then switched to Redline Two Stroke Racing synthetic and it's run on that since. I pulled it down last week to change the crank bearings due to seal leakage and was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the piston, ring and cylinder. The piston, from the ring down, could have been put back in the box and sold as new. From the ring up it was slightly discolored with a very small amount of carbon on top that I easily wiped off with a regular paper towel. The bearings at each end of the rod were in perfect condition and the crank bearings were smooth but the seals had worn to the point the engine would no longer idle low enough even with the throttle blade shut completely. Two new bearings and she runs like the day it was broken in. The Pennz was mixed at 32:1 for break-in (about 2 gallons) and 40:1 thereafter. The Redline is mixed at 40:1. After seeing the inside of my DL (some of the machining could have been better) I know the Pennz is good stuff as is the Redline. There are other very good oils out there but these two have proven themselves, at least in my situation.

P.S. This engine has generally had the dog snot run out of it. Full throttle knife edge spins, 5 minute plus hoverfests, the whole works of things you shouldn't do to an engine. In short it's been abused it's whole life. The way it was broken in was a needle tuning on the ground when first installed on the plane and flown the way I intended to fly it for the duration of it's life. It ran this way for the rest of the break-in with the exception of "no hovering for the first couple of hours and also no knife edge spins during that same period". I don't run the engine rich at all, never have, as rich on a gasser just makes carbon; the high speed needle is set for max rpm's and it gets checked and readjusted for peak regularly.
