MLD-35 Gasoline Engine
 

Hi Guys,

I am starting this thread so that it will be easier for me to find and track. We are formally introducing a new MLD 35cc gas engine, MLD-35.

As many of you may know Melody has been working on the the new MLD-30X Project At this point I am glad to say that we are now in the position to confirm with you of the accomplishments we have been able to make based upon your great suggestions (provided from our MLD-28 gasoline engine threads, telephones, emails, tradeshows and fun flys). At this point, this 35cc engine has performing very well in every aspect of tests. We'll be releasing this engine later this Spring (May, 2010). You can probably poke around at RC Universe or CERMARK or your MLD distributor for product information. I am certain that pre-orders will be available through you local or favorite dealers.

Well, I am here to address the requests you guys had. So I will go over each and every one of the requestes you have put forth to us... So from your wish list, here is ...

1. Rear Carburetor

As you can clearly see from the picture, the new MLD-35 is a REAR CARBURETOR setup. The new Walbro carburetor sits on a new carburetor block.

The new REAR CARBURETOR setup required a complete crank case, cylinder design. This fored us to design your MLD-35 to operate at ALL positions. Some of you asked us to rotate the carb block, because they wanted to improve access to the arms. With the new design, you can rotate the engine around its crank shaft to any degrees... In another words with the current design, you are no longer limited to 0 degree or 180 degrees. You can now position the MLD-35 from 0 to 359.9999 degrees!

We have gone to a much smaller spark plug from our reliable CHAMPION mfg. Although we are in the final stage of approval process. However, we assure you, it is much smaller.

After extended and exhausted research, I was trying to figure out why such request? The reason was simple. People felt MLD ignition was not reliable. We compared failure data with other gas manufacturers and CDI distributors. We came to the conclusion that our CDI was not failing at a higher rate, giving the data. However, with the MLD and SPE iginitions came with much higher degree of mis-information and poor boot design.

Therefore we chose to improve the boot design, change our pickup sensor, change electronic sourcings to Japan and USA. Ultimately, we chose to make ours even better, because we want our ignition system to provide you more in both reliablity and features. You will soon see new features from the Melody ignitions.

Done. I did not post any picture nor performance data because we want greater number of testing. Our goals are performance, reliability and consistency. That means we need increase our standard deviation. A larger standard deviation would prove to us that our engine will have achieved all 3 phases (performance, reliability and consistency).

After long meetings, testings, prototypes, redesigns, and deliberations. MLD-35 did not choose to go with the longer stroke design like others. MLD series of engines are designed performance, reliability and consistency. If this engine gone with the longer stroke design, MLD-35 would have to compensate particular feature over features. This would have forced this engine to be a very NICHE gas / petro engine. A long stroke engine would have been a good 3D type engine. However, it would have been lacking in other areas...

Instead, we decided to take what we learned from OS Engines, their team of designers, and their accomplishments. That is simply to manufacture an engine that is TRUELY WELL ROUNDED like the MLD-28. So now, this MLD-35 will be able to compete with the likes of Zenoah G34, G35, G36, G38, other gas 30cc - 35cc - 40cc engines. That is one of the major reason why we chose to move up in displacement (not giving up footprint) versus staying in a lower displacement. Ultimately, we chose to achieve performance with ALL prop diameters and pitches without compensating the engine's longivity.

another consideration for you. Wrap around Pitts style muffler. I know many fliers require this for tight cowl applications. This has become a primary function for me when looking at engines. Just a thought

Sorry, there will not be a 30cc version. Had we chose the 30cc, it would have been a 28cc upgrade.

Instead, we chose to go the 35cc route instead. MLD-35 is a completely a different engine that is designed with other applications in mind. As to the effort, it was quite symbiotic. If you guys did not give us what you wanted, we would have gone down the wrong path, and wasted precious resources for everyone. It is important to note the efforts put forth by the manufacturer, Melody. I am simply a glorified mouth piece, for better or worse.:)

Sorry, the AUW or gross weight is just under 2.5 lb. The actual production may be lower, but at this point I like to be conservative.

The first release will be with side mount muffler. Pitts style muffler will most likely be available as an accessory at the start. However the rear exhaust (Pitts style) verison of MLD-35R will be available around June. Aside from the side and the rear versions, we hope to have other versions available to you as well. However, we are working with the ARF mfg in making it possible for everyone.

As far as pricing I would look at the competition

- MT35 is $279 and available now with some solid reviews. I am sure if you kept in that ballpark you will sell some. Including me who looks forward to one :)

I tend to like the single bolt prop hubs myself. This way you can swap props around when needed without having to drill them. Was that ever talked about ?

Man thats a good looking engine, one that almost makes you want to leave the cowl off. The death of the DL 30 is at hand LOL.
