sick of the mess
 

i have flown electrics for some time and i recently bought a 2-stroke .60 trainer and have flown it for about a year or more. the thing is that im sooo sick of the mess of a 2-stroke nitro and i really just want something that i can gas up and go. size is not a huge issue but im not looking for a giant plane i would like somthing in the .60 to .90 range. i have loads of land to fly on and i have pretty much completely taught myself this hobby.. i would like to get either a sopwith pup or corsair. i like the Zenoah g20ei but the price seems high. so my question is what do you guys recomend?

Well, you are definitely a good "candidate" for gasoline engine power, and once you try it you will probably love it and never go back to anything else. I convert all my gas engines from lawn equipment, chain saws etc., so I will let one of the other guys in this forum recommend an engine. The Zenoah is a great engine, but pricey as you say. There are other options in ready to fly engines these days.

If you are quite handy with mechanical things, you might check out the "conversions" forum.

For something in the 26 to 35cc size have a look at the following and decide on what works for you price wise and which suits your application the best. The DLE is the powerhouse of the bunch. The MLD 35 looks good as a prototype, we'll see how it does once it is released.

Forgot about them.. we have a couple of Evolution 26's in our club. One of them is on a pipe. Both are great running engines, with as Pe says, fantastic power.

thnks for the help. what other engines are out there that are about the same size as a g20? (brand wise) what i guess im saying is im looking for an engine that is in the 20cc to 26cc range. somthing that will work in a .60 size plane.

RCS SV-17 is what I use in the 17cc range. Distributed by TBM in U.S. I used it to replace a Saito FA-100

Wow, you've really got it narrowed down to two completely different planes. The good thing is they are both round engines, so the weight of the gasser will help.

I know the feeling. I've got about 70 nitro engines and I'm getting so I don't want to be bothered with the mess. As a sailplaner at heart, even the gassers are messy.

My buddy replaced his saito 100 with the 17 and it just barely flys it . It nis the Goldberg decathalon Arf. No longer made.

i love the pup for its biwing design and just how it was the begining of flight known to man. but the corsair is a pretty gull wing that just seems to float through the air.

that raises another question. how messy is a gasser? it still has oil so how bad is it?

Well compared to a sailplane, messy, compared to a equivalent nitro, spotless.
I have a Waco Bipe I had a Saito 170R3 in, the oil just ran off it at the end of the day. I put a MT-57 in it, twice the power, and at the end of the day if I wipe it with a clean cloth you can just tell you wipe something with it. I run 32:1 all the time, if you used 100:1 you might get that after a month. The difference between nitro an gas is like night and day, remember in a nitro engine the oil goes through the engine and out the exhaust, a gasser the oil is burnt.

Good morning toothman,
I to got tired of the nitro mess after about 2 years of flying rc planes. That is when I bought my gasser and which was a CRRC-Pro 40 size engine and put it on a 120 size stick. I was hooked on gas from that point on. I enjoyed being able to just fuel up the plane and Flip and Fly!!

From there I bought a 30 size engine that had problems right out of the box. After having my carl goldberg Wildstick severaly damaged 2 times becouse of the issues the 30 size engine had, I finall just gave up on it.

That is when I bougth my first RCGF 20cc rear carb engine from agape racing. I put it on a fourstar 60 and flew the plane for quite sometime with out even the first problem.

Since then I now have several planes with the RCGF engines on them. I bought a Profile Katana and a CRRC-Pro 26cc side carb engine, and have been flying that bird for about 3 months now. I have enjoyed it SOOOOOO much.

hey tooth man, if you are still looking for info,, Im new to the gassers also. I love the clean flying. I started with a weedwhacker engine but realized they are a bit heavy and not as much power as the same size comercial type gasser. I then bought a SV-17 from troy built models, initially very disappointing. It never ran well and barely flew my 60 size p-47. I sent it back to the company and, to their credit, they worked on it and got it back to me with some modifications. I just got it today so dont know if it has improved (did cost me $30 in two-way shipping) my next engine was a DLE 30...what a difference- runs great, not a lick oftrouble. pulls my seagull extra 260- 180 great. I have learned that off-brand, "cheaper" ,enginesare not worth the trouble. the DLE enginesseem to be a greatvalue,they arein the midpricerange and mine, as well as my friends',ran greatout of the box. they are commingout witha 20cc engine soon. or so I hear.hope thishelps. The new DLE 20 would fit your plane size, it is the one I would try, it due to be available in a week or two.

Just reading your posts, here, and remembered that Fox has developed and are marketing a .50 gas engine. That would certainly get you out of the gooby mess on your airplane. I must also do a little PR for Fox, I had some trouble with a 3.2, so I sent it in, and they fixed it cheap, the engine was 2 yrs. old. They are a good company that stands by their engines. I put a stihl 23cc conversion on a 4-star 60. It needed about 2-oz tail weight. It flies great. I am learning to hover it. It also fits inn the back of Ford Explorer with the wings on. This is a big plus.

My bigger stuff can be a pain to transport. Consiter carefully transport issues! I have a 1/4 scale Fokker D-VII to be finished soon. I am not thrilled about assembly and disassembly. It will have to be broken down to transport, reassembled at the field, then broken down to transport and reassembled to store at home. I did not fully conister it when I bought the kit.

Since you are looking for a gas engine to power .60-.90 size models I suggest that you look at the JBA. 90 or the DLE 20 engines that will be available from Jody at Valley View or a G20, which though a bit higher in price will more than likely outlast you. Remember that a 'quality' product is hardly ever cheap.
