engine tuning
went to the field today and the gas engine "expert" was there, when he saw i had a gasser there he came over and looked at my plane , and asked what my needles were set at and wanted me to turn them all the way in and back them off 2 turns for the factory setting so it would run right, i am not going to tell what engine it is or what brand of propeller i have ,so all the brand loyal people wont chime in , it was turning 6400 with a 18X8 , the expert told me it thats all you will get out of it, and dont touch a thing, well to me it was running like crap and vibrating a lot ,so i started leaning the top end, ended up with 7200 and smooth running and a 1400 idle with good transition

RE: engine tuning
I think you are the expert here. Factory settings are useful when you just want to get the engine running and don't know where to start. Most factory settings are on the rich side of the ideal setting so the engine will start and run. You should start to adjust to the ideal settings (as you have done) on the first tank of gas.

RE: engine tuning
what a funny thing.... how could he know that 2 turns out is the best setting for a gasser engine. 1.5-2 is just a start point and then lean it to peak on low with smooth transition. The high should be peak to, you will notice that there is a small space from rich and lean side when the rpms drop. Vibration should be less with a fine tune engine.

RE: engine tuning
2 turns out on both is to get the engine running...Too rich on any carb...
Amazing, we have been telling people for 22 YEARS about "factory" settings... Someone finally got it, you [>:]can tell your "expert" how much he doesn't know about carbs |
RE: engine tuning
Always see how someone elses planes/helis are running and flying before letting them mess with yours :)
