Travel Cases for race planes
Because there is no 424/426/422 racing in Texas, I have been considering trying to find a way to fly to distant contests. The driving times are just too long, and besides, it's actually cheaper to fly than drive most distances. To do so, a secure case is needed to keep the models safe and unbroken during air shipment. I read that Randy Smith used a golf bag case for his 422's.
I searched for "Amplifier Cases" and found this website. Apparently they will make a custom size case for $99. It is made of 1/4" ply, covered in vinyl, with metal edges, latches, and lined with carpet. I suspect that something like this would do just fine for a couple of Q-500 airplane or any other model for that matter. Has anyone ever done business with these guys before?

RE: Travel Cases for race planes
For simplicity, many of us just use cardboard boxes. The ones a composite kit comes in are usually pretty heavy duty and hold up well. When we ship out Sweet Vees or Ninja's Kits we have never had a problem. 2 or 3 planes is possible. Our boxes are 10"X12" 58" Dbl. weight corrogated. Just be sure to send a seperate box with the heavier items. Motors tools etc. Anything that is fairly light weight that you can float in the box with the plane will help with the volume of stuff you take. UPS, FEDEX Ground and USPS all work pretty well and the cost is less than a heavy structured box or custom case.
Good Luck,
Tom

I prefferred my Heavy Duty Aluminum box, but I think I paid about $300 for it used. Expensive to ship, but my stuff got there in one piece. Have seen both Wood and cardboard boxes get damaged, and gun cases get stolen...
Good luck..

RE: Travel Cases for race planes
These are all outstanding ideas. Thanks! I'm going to see what kind of box dimensions would be required for 2 Q-500's with the gear legs removed, but with the engines and tails still attached, and then see if that can meet the UPS/FedEx dimension requirements. Since I make my living as an airline pilot, it might be possible for me to check the box as "luggage". I'll check it out.
