Gap Less Hinges

I seal them with clear monicote on my stock class Q-500 (Great planes Vipper and Predater 2) ;)

Are you building a plane with a glassed wing and tail, or is it monokote?

go to nmpra.org and look for the links at the bottom of the home page. Thier are 2 great articles on Skinned hinges. I think they are easier to do than regualar hinges if you are glassing the wing anyway. on a monokote wing use #600 scotch tape and make a "wiper" by putting two pieces of tape together. sticky side to sticky side. Leave half of the sticky side exposed on one the bottom and cut the sticky side off on the top. Some use clear office dividers and the tape to make the wiper. Kind of hard to explain in a post.I tried to take a picture of mine but you cant see the tape[:o] Maybe some one else has a picture.

Hi there guys thanks for all the imformation on the Gap Less Hinges.
Yes it it for a new racer, & I will be covering the model in Ultracaot, I have gone to the thead that Dave Norman has kindly posted. This guy makes it look so easy, anyway I will have ago at doing it. I think this way you dont get any Flutter & it makes it easy to Paint or cover. 0nce I have got the hang of it I will Glass the Wing & V-Tail & Paint it. |

Fluter has very little to do with the type of hinges. The hinges, of course, have to be free enough to allow the surface to move freely. Flutter is usually the result of a soft, flexible control surface vibrating at the outboard tip.
The picture shows a cure for an aileron with a full gapless hinge. A piece of tape across the corner. Ed S |

To other pylon guys. Tell me whats the piont in going to all the trouble, in doing skinned hinges as to standard hinges like in your photo? is it just for looks! or what? Tell me why do guys use the skinned hinned method for, when its a lot easyer to use the standard hinge way? Thanks. |

They are perceived to have less drag in the 428, 422, F3D and F5D classes. Enough to make a difference.

Nothing like false perceptions. The air is turbulent by the time you reach the hinge line. Sealed conventional hinges are just as good. But if you are making a molded wing, they should be easier to make.

Is that true of all control surfaces (e.g. V-tail)? If you have a skinned hinge on top is it unnecessary to cover the gap on the bottom to help reduce drag? |

On a solid surface, I doubt you would see any difference in drag.

I agree with Highplanes that the perception may be false and flow separation probably occurs before the hinge line. 2 million bucks and a good wind tunnel and I will get the correct answer. Answers are free, good answers cost a little, correct answers cost a lot.

Then why is it so important to have a sharp trailing edge on the wing and stab???

I doubt that it is. But again back to the tunnel. What is important is to make every effort to reduce drag. And skin hinges or sharp trailing edges may not reduce drag but they won't add drag, hopefully.
