Radar guns
I'm looking at getting a radar gun. Is the Stalker sports gun good enough or do I need to get the Stalker Pro?
|
RE: Radar guns
I don't have any experience with Stalker, but we used these ProSpeed guns when I race boats and they work pretty well.
http://www.radarguns.com/decatur-radar-guns-cr-1k.html Whatever you buy I would talk to the sales people or manufacturer and get a recommendation before you buy. |
RE: Radar guns
It would depend on how fast the planes you want to time are going. Isn't the sport limited to somewhere around 150? The pro we used at our speed rally was certed for 299 [8D]

RE: Radar guns
The Bushnell gun is like hunting bear with a stick compared to the Stalker!
The plane needs to be soooooo close and directly in line with the gun (and the guy working it) that it just isn't safe at high speed. The Stalker gun is considerably more expensive but it works every penny spent better. After seeing the diffrence in the two I wouldn't even consider the Bushnell...sorry. |
RE: Radar guns
Yes , I agree with you vicman , with the Bushnell radar you need to pass the airplane very veeeery close or you won't get a readig .

RE: Radar guns
Or, let Gibson hold the gun :)
|
RE: Radar guns
Anyone have a view on wether or not the Stalker Sport is OK or do you need to go the extra dollar (or three) and get the Stalker Pro?
|
RE: Radar guns
Joe,
Go back and read post 3 where I asked you what speed range you are trying to operate in. Once you answer that question you can decide which one is for you. I agree with Dave, let Gibson hold the gun:D:D |
RE: Radar guns
If your really wanting to know how fast your going,,, set up a course and use a stop watch. The better you can fly the course,,, the faster(lower times) you will go:D

RE: Radar guns
It appears the Stalker Sport ($895.00) reads up to 250mph. Where as the Pro ($1495.00) reads up to 300mph. The Pro seems to be much more sensitive, and can read a baseball up to 400 ft away. Where as the Sport is still out there at 350 ft away.
Based on what I've read, it appears the Stalker Sport is more than capable of handling your needs. Unless you flying over 250mph... but for the price difference, get the Sport. Randy Bridge |
RE: Radar guns
Don't let Gibson hold anything!! He will drop it!!:D

RE: Radar guns
Randy,
Thanks for the comments. I finally got some advice back from a member of the Australian F3D team, who has had no trouble tracking F3D models up to 350km/hour on the course from over 100m away using a Stalker Sports unit. He reckons you do not need the Stalker Pro to measure the speed of anything we fly. I recently got an Eagletree Flight Data Recorder to see what my models were doing. While the data is great, it is a pain to download at the field and try and view on a computer screen in bright sunlight (lots of that downunder this time of the year). I concluded that if you want to do a lot of experimenting to determine what works best, you need a radar gun. The only question was what sort of gun. By the way, I am told that speeds measured with the Stalker Sports Unit have calibrated very well with Eagletree results. |
RE: Radar guns
At our last quickie 25 race we had a sport mounted on a tripod coming out of turn 2. There was also a large number display for the callers and audience to see as the planes were racing.

RE: Radar guns
Hi Joe
The sport will do everything you need as said above, only real difference is the wank value of saying I have the PRO. Terry |
RE: Radar guns
Wank value???[X(]

It's an Ausy thing... just like, "No Worries"... or "No Drama".. RB |
RE: Radar guns
Hmmm, I was thinking it was a descriptive term for a "Bird".....

RE: Radar guns
Sorry for the Aussie slang
Its more like saying Ha Ha mines bigger than yours!!!! Terry |

Sorry for the Aussie slang Its more like saying Ha Ha mines bigger than yours!!!! Terry I'll let you have the bigger radar gun as long as you let me be the faster pilot:D |
RE: Radar guns
SmokinJoe: Well, did you buy the Stalker Sport? If so, how is it doing?
Our club is ready to buy a radar gun but have had different opinions between the Stalker Sport and Pro models. I don't think we will ever see a model going faster than 200 mph, but we may see numbers close 150 with some edf's or hotliners. We were about to purchase a Decature Prospeed but they dropped their line of displays for the time being. We are interested in adding the Stalker 3 x7 display for our electric meet next spring. Any other experiences with Stalker Sport versus Pro would be very helpful at this time. |
RE: Radar guns
After talking to the pros here, I'm looking for a Stalker Sports radar gun. One of the Australian F3D team members has one and he swears by it. He has no trouble tracking his F3D models up to the high 300 km/hour range coming out of dives. I'm told that the Stalker Pro is better, but not necessary for what we do.

RE: Radar guns
Don't buy Bushnell. With Bushnell you risk your life and is not precise.[:o]
