Hitec 225 servos

I need some feed back on Hitec 225 servos. I'm getting conflicting reports. I had a servo just quit at a meet in April. After some conversation with others I heard from a dealer salesman and a fellow racer that they had problems with this servo also. I bought several of these servos last winter and need to know if I should find an other use for them? If so which servos have proven track record? Please help..........Thanks

There may be better servos out there, but I can't think of a servo that fits the purpose better than the 225 for the average racer. I have used close to 100 of these, with very good results. From 165 mph quickees to 180 MPH Q40s.

I'm not sure if I would use them in a fun-fly design with extreme throws, but they seem to do very well for our racing use.

I would not hesitate to use them in a Quickee or Q40, even Nelson or Jett powered.

To what Bill and Dave said the Forty I have work fine. My preferrance is for the plastic gear version.

G. H. B.,

To answer your question as to what other servos are acceptable, For Q500 I use JR 341s and 3021s. I put one 341 on each rudder/elevator, one on the motor, and one 3021 for both ailerons.

The 3021 is no longer available and has been replaced by the 3121. I don't have any experience with the 3121 but have been told that it is perfectly fine for this purpose as well.

I have a flying buddy who uses 341s for everything on his Q500s. He uses one on each rudder/elevator, one on motor, and one for EACH aileron. I haven't tried the dual aileron setup myself but it works for him.

Yow!!! you buy them by the 100? Do you replace gears/cases or just chuck em in the trash after a crash? One thing I do notice about the Hitec stuff... it dosn't survive a crash as well the JR servos. The cases shatter much easier often taking the IC board with it. I have been replacing my old JR 901/3021 cases/gears for many years and those still in service(85%) still work as good as new. I bought a bunch of Hitec HS-225's and HS-85's a while back but I just can't stop using the old JR stuff long enough to put them into a plane!

I don’t think I have reached quantity 100 yet, but it will not be long. I use them in almost everything. I have never had one fail that I know about. The only case breakage I have experienced is the mounting ears breaking off. As John B. mentioned, I also prefer the plastic gears.

I use the 225's in my apra racers with great success. The only 225 I have seen fail, was a week after the pilot inadvertently landed in a lake, submerging the servo. I don't believe he dried it out. So they are not the best for underwater applications.

The Hitec 81's are another matter. I use them for throttle, and have lost 3, 2 during races and 1 during practice. Very frustrating.

Thanks for the input. I feel a little better about running the 225's
now. I inherited some JR 911's and 3121's with I'm putting into a
Q-40. 911 on ailerons and 3121 on elev. and rudder. Sounds from what I've been hearing this is a safe bet. Again thanks for the input. Til next time. Keep'em tight and fast.

I have used them in several 40 size 3D planes. I have had two get flaky. Both were on the rudder of the same plane bath started acting up after about 50 flights. They would hunt back and forth 5 or 10 degrees. It didn't matter whether they were at neutral or deflected by the tx stick. They are an excellent servo for the $$$. They really kick butt on a five cell pack for the 3d type stuff. As close to digital servo responsiveness I have messed with.
