Default smoke fluid substitute

Has anyone experimented with home made smoke fluid
hobby shop wants $20+ per gallon
that stuff goes pretty fast
i am new to smoke and dont know what you guys are using

Lamp oil will do, though smoke is not very dense and short lived. Keeps your muffler and plane clean too.

This is a very old question. A lot of people have tried home brews. But in the end I think, if you want smoke you have to pay for it.
I saw Super-Dri at my lhs yesterday and it was 26.99. Daaaaaaaammm. I bought Robart instead for 21.99.

I used to use straight Diesel fuel, made pretty good smoke and it was cheap

Yep.... I mix mine 75% diesel to 25% automatic transmission fluid. Good white smoke.
