Default JR DS8711 Servo replacment

Hi Guys,
Flying an older set up here. I have an 8711 servo on my rudder and a 5 volt system. This servo needs servicing, but I'd like to replace it and use this repaired servo as a spare, but JR no longer has a direct replacement, I am a big fan of JR servos. Am I missing something? What would you guys use today. I think it has 430 oz in of torque or something like that. Id rather not upgrade to a HV system right now. Plane flies great just the way it is.
Much TIA
Rick

Rick, measure the distance between the servo mounting screws. It may help finding a direct replacement. Can you live with less torque? Dan.

Rick,
Have you looked at the JR 8921 or 8931? Both are Smart Servos so no need to worry about what voltage you're running..

Guys,
Maybe I am looking in the wrong place. Horizon doesn't seem to have any appropriate servos at all. Not even 8931's. Where are you guys buying servos from? Have I been away for that long?

Hello Rick!
IF you are only running 5V system, then you aren't getting the certified torque of 403oz, but rather closer to 347oz of torque. If you meant 6V, then great, if not, no need to buy the more expensive servo for the higher torque that you aren't achieving anyway. You might consider upgrading your battery power system too.

Dan you are right. Can I run these older servos (8411's) at 6VDC? It would just be a matter of turning up the regulator (I have it set at 5.0 volts), but I think I might burn up the standard choke and throttle servos. This is a backup plane which is flying quite well - so honestly I'd rather work on something else and just fly the wheel pants off this one. However, my rudder servo is in need of service. Gonna call LHS which isn't really local these days...

Yes, 8411 servos run on 6V. Most of the other servos will also run on 6V too.
JR - JRPS8411 - DS8411 Digital Ultra Torque MG Servo
  • Size Category: Standard.
  • Type: Digital.
  • Torque: 155 oz-in @ 4.8V, 188 oz-in @ 6V.
  • Speed: .18 sec/60 @ 4.8V, .15 sec/60 @ 6V

8711 servos pop up for sale all the time either here, FG, or RCGroups. I saw two of them on FG the other day go for $50 each. Horizon still does a bit of JR stuff, mostly relating to the radio items that use the Spektrum RF format and some servo work, but for the most part you're now going to have to go to JR Americas for that service work.

Zeeb,
I saw that JR Americas site, I thought it was bogus at first. Is there where the real JR support is these days?
RP
PS in my past life I never had good experiences buying used RC equipment. I'd just assume buy a new servo, looking for a 8711 equivalent today....

I've not had issues buying servos and such, no tx's but I understand your reluctance. Still, if the seller has good feedback and you can pay using PayPal so you can get your money back quite easily if there is a problem?

Anyway.
This guy has five of them, says two are new. Maybe he'd sell just one?

Oh yeah, the support question; yep JR Americas unless it's the radio stuff I mentioned earlier. They are the JR importer/distributor now since JR and Horizon split the sheets.
