WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE 70% EXTRA?
I remember a BIG 70% Extra or Edge that someone was building. Last time I saw it it was painted and ready to test fly. What ever happened to it? Did it fly well? Info and pics would be great.

RE: WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE 70% EXTRA?
I saw it the 2002 TOC in Las Vegas and I have some pictures of it somehwere. It was pretty amazing to see but I think there were some insurance issues with regards to flying it. It would seem like a huge waste of time to build something that large (and expensive) and never see it fly. The fellow that built it did an amazing job and it turned out ot be very impressive.

It was a Stauducher and I really don't think the AMA would let them fly it. I would just go into the desert and go for it...JMO

I wonder is some people would try to get away with a 99.9% scale model. No point really go out and get the real damned thing! But make a 99.9% out of a B52..............

50000 is a lot of money, but no sense on just seeing it sit there. To me id go fly it wold probably do the best hovering and torque rolls ever if it has the power? 60hp is enough right?

hey does this guy have a web site, or is there a place where you can learn more about this plane. I would really like to know when and where he was going to fly this monster. Road trip anyone.

This is real interesting - as much for the technology & engine that went into it, as the airframe. I think UAV & UCAV Technology will advance the RC Sport like we never dreamed over the next decade. There's all manner of (UAV) software comin' out that can make "RC" flight safer. The declassified versions shouldn't be long in coming.....
IMAGINE - you taxi to the end of the runway and push a button on your transmitter - the aircraft computer locks in the coordinates (GPS) - any kind of problem, and it comes back home for a safe leanding!

Same here.. had some $50,000+ into it from what I recall... not very nice if you crash

Not to start anything here, but no way that this airplane cost anything near $50,000.00. If you start paying out $50.00/hour for the design, and building time from somone, maybe but not as we modellers build airplane where we never calculate our time.
I have about 100 hours at this point on my 34% Edge and at $50.00/hour, then I have over $8,000.00 in time and material. You get the picture.

34% is a little different from 70% dont you think? If you dont believe me, which I could very well be wrong too, i just distincly remember him talking about this plane saying he had 50-60,000 in it.
Think, a cowl for a 33% arf cost some 30-50$ EASY, how much would a 70% CUSTOM cowl cost, over $100 probably. Many things on his plane are custom made and I would have no trouble seeing how much else he has into it.

RE: WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE 70% EXTRA?
First off..It was a 70% Staudaucher... I see some astute posters have noticed this nugget
Second..$100 for the cowl is gonna be a might low... by a couple grand.. This ain't a Stans cowl for a 70% Staud, it's one-off composite
Third...The guy runs a business that builds composite parts for AC.. I bet he knows what it cost...
Fourth.. The engine costs alone are a pretty good Chunk of the entire cost of Rogers plane..
Fifth..just a few Links to the various websites with details of this plane will show that it's not just whipped up from some scraps...
And all the people who dogged him over insurance, liability, how insane it was to build a 70% (99%, you get the idea) RC plane has about soured him on having a public test flight. Last I heard he was just gonna get a small support crew together and do it without ANY prying eyes from naysayers..

You can build a homebuilt aircraft for less then $25,000.00 with parts only.
So I repeat, it did not cost $50,000.00 in material. The engine is a known engine at about $4000.00 The servos are seikos at $189.00ea. Must I say more.
A large cowl is more expensive but not mega bucks..
The metaphore I mentioned about the 34% was to show you that we can have mega bucks if we all tally up our time. which we don't.
And that is where his $50,000.00 comes into play. Certainly not material.

RE: WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE 70% EXTRA?
Whenever I see that 70% I think of the receiver that must be fitted in it. Even with dual redundant receivers, I bet it's possible to forget where you fitted it in the fuse and lose it!
It somehow doesn't seem right that a plane that size should rely on a tiny little receiver to come between it and destruction.
