Default Airplane hoist?

Does anyone have a design of a hoist/pulley system where I can roll my plan onto a sheet of plywood and then by one rope hoist it up so I can park my car. I would like it to be if I am lifting 50 pounds, the pulley system would reduce the pull to 25 pounds (2 to 1).

thanks

Chuck

Fred: There are three J-3 Cubs in the photo, but one is in the back behind the Stinson. It is a 1/3 scale - own design. The Cub next to the Stinson is a Balsa USA (brand new) that I bought to get the engine out of it. It is for sale. The big Cub on the left is my own design, 40%, 14.5 ft. span, and is waiting for an engine. If it flies as good as my others, I will make plans and a complete building instruction manual available.

To: RTK - what you don't see is another bay in the garage and a nice air-conditioned room off to the left that has my drafting table (3 x 7), computer, TV, and hundreds of packages of hinges, horns, etc. I don't go far to get what I need while building. Also have a lifetime supply of balsa, so I keep cranking out airplanes one after another. I love to design and build.

Jim, thanks for the input. Since I am going to hoist about 50 pounds, does your design give a 2 to 1 (pulling 25 pounds)?

Any other designs out there?

Chuck: I use double pulleys both at top and bottom. Hook the rope to the top, down-up-down-up-pull - a 50# plane requires a 10# pull.

Jim, I guess I am slow. I still don't know how I would make this work on a 4x8 sheet of ply wood. I want to hoist my plane, wings, charger, etc.

thx

Chuck: My method won't work with a sheet of plywood. You might think about having two rotating pipes that ropes from each corner would coil on - very similar to that used to lift a boat out of the water. That would work.

Just attach 4 rope's, 1 at each corner to 4 pulleys attached to ceiling. then figure out how you want the pull ropes to group together, into 1. sounds simple. I found it's easier to leave the car outside. dick

In order to make a pulley system cut the lifting effort in half, you need to have one end of the rope anchored and the other run through a double pulley system. The fifty pound weight is shared eqully by the anchor and the top pulley, and your effort is half (25#). The distance you move the rope is double the distance the shelf moves.

In order to make this fit your application, you'll have to design it yourself. However, I caution you against it. I think you will run into balance problems, eventually leading to the 4X8 sheet tipping in some direction and spilling your hardware off on the floor.

I have decided to anchor one end of my framework with a hinge, and let it droop down about 45 degrees from the garage rafters when down. Then I will either hoist or push the free end of the loaded framework up to rafter level, and secure it with a good gate latch.

I say framework, because I'm making mine from 2x4's, rather than trust my wings to a plywood sheet. I also have open rafters in my garage, and the gap between rafters lends itself to this type system.

I know that Hobbies X-treme did a pulley system for their rectangle slot car track that came out of the ceiling. They used pulleys and an electric winch. Once they figured out the gyometry it ran fine up and down. And let me tell you........it was heavy, easily 200lbs.

You might want to check ebay. Search for bicycle hoist and you will find several vendors. A set can usually be had for around $30 including shipping but it doesn't include the nylon straps. I've bought several from which to hang my.....bicycles (gasp).

Hope this helps.

My garage is not as nice as yours, that gave me other excuse to make some home improvements in this area next spring, while this happens I have some concerns: how do the extreme weather conditions, that may prevail in some garages, affect the batteries or other components of your airplanes stored in garages like mine without heating or AC support? I guess a regular garage would have poor air circulation, high humidity levels, very low or very high tempratures, etc is that an issue at all for long or mid term airplane storage?

The only problem I have with storage in the garage is rust. Any music wire will rust from the humidity in the summer. Therefore, when I build a model, all exterior music wire parts get primed and painted. All interior wire parts either get painted or coated with a thin layer of grease. Those two things solve the problem, and that is the only problem I have/had. When I hang the airplane, the batteries are hooked to an ACE wall charger that keeps them on trickle all the time.
