Will it balance with a DA-85, I thinking you will have to go to a pull-pull for the rudder to keep the weight out of the tail? I'm really interested in that combo, I've always liked the plane, just didn't have the funds for an engine for it.

Will it balance with a DA-85, I thinking you will have to go to a pull-pull for the rudder to keep the weight out of the tail? I'm really interested in that combo, I've always liked the plane, just didn't have the funds for an engine for it.

I am getting ready to build that exact combo, had my first cap w/the DA100, great combo, sold to a fellow modeler. Have another that I am in the process of lightning up to mount an 85 to. my thinking is that it will require the rudder servo to be mounted a bit further forward. Its going to be approx sixty days before I believe it will be flight ready but i am leaving the rudder servo mounting for the very last thing, that way I will have a better idea of where it needs to be.

I am lightening the airframe as much as possible with out getting too involved or compromising any strength. observation leads me to believe that the fuselage itself will only be able to lightened a few ounces but most of that will be able to come out of the aft end of the plane and that is good to help balance the lighter motor. I am not going to use the stock pilot--may just frost the inside of the canopy and not use a pilot at all. leave off the instrument panel and pilot and there is 7 oz saved and you can do a little carving on the hatch and save a little bit more. I kept the carbon tube from the first one i sold, its a couple ozs lighter than the aluminum. Just got the Graphtech carbon gear. It weighs 11-1/2 oz compared to 19oz for the alum. gear which is great but it makes it even more important to keep the weight off the tail. Lighter wheels for sure.

My goal is to wind up with the DA85 RTF 2-1/2 -3 lbs lighter than the the 100 powered plane. Not sure that will happen but thats the goal. It will be easy to compare when I am finished because my old one is still nearby and we will weigh them both and compare.

take care

da 85 will be sound, rudder going pull-pull anyway, seen on with a zdz80 (before rv-j) going by use and it was fine not balistic but ok gotta love sea level for light planes lol

I had tried a pull pull set up with a previous Cap 580...
I used the heavy Hitecs that were in the tail.
I do not think that you will have too much trouble balancing it out with the 80.....
Especially since you hav the Two wing tube options......

The only down side that I see to that is that you will not be able to modify and place a internal can muffler...
As it would require you to cut out the 1st tube in order to get the can in....

I am sure you could fabricate a tunnel on the exterior...
You would really have a powerhouse if you could place a ES comp. Carbon fiber tuned pipe on it...

I love the sound of tuned/can mufflers.... and the power from them....

I might try to place a pair of CF pipes on my cap with a Da 100 using crossover headers to eachive the length....
Or I might just place some regular short can in it....

The only reason I am considering this option, is that I have damaged both my mufflers and rather than waste money on a new pair, I might as well try something better....

Has anyone tried this plane with a DA-85 in it yet? I would be interested in the results.

A ZDZ80 Super was used with great results.........
A DA, ZDZ, 3W, Fox, are all going to work great.......
85cc or 80cc, It isn't going to make any difference....

i just got the DA-85 for mine this week, trying real hard to get it ready for next weekend. Will be using the JTEC large volume pitts muffler and a VESS 26B prop. i am very anxious to feel the difference in flight between this one and my old 100 powered one.

Zonker- Did you get the 85 in the 580 Cap Yet, if so do you have any pics you can post? I really thought about one of these planes for two years, would be interested in seeing what it does with the 85. Thanks.

dude if you want to run a 80 you might want to start with something lighter .mine flies good with a zdz 120. 29# .you would have to do a lot of lighting to fly a 80. i just ordered lanier yak 94"for my da 100 . this plane is 399.00 bucks .and is lighter with the money you save lighten the yak.now were talking.

Excuse me, numbers say and I have seen that the DA-85 is doing almost the same as the 100 and almost "2 lbs lighter" ! Do the math, with a few things lightened up this bird should fly awesome, I seen it with the ZDZ Super 80 in it and it has plenty. Just what I know.

sorry guys i just ment mine flies fine and their are cheaper ways to get a light plane. trou built wants the price of a new plane to lighten mine .and by the way you could fly a transport truck if you remove enough weight it just gets expensive.i love my cap and would get another in a hart beat.the plane is not that hard to live with the way it was ment to be

my point exactly fly the brick for what it is and buy a plane that has your target weight for the price of lighting the brick.this way you end up with too planes that are not to bad.well that is what i told the wife .now if i can just talk her into a 85 for my new plane.

RAMJETT- Nothing intended toward you, I totally agree with you, for the price they want to lighten this plane you could have another setting in front of you. I've never flown the 580 but I had a 27% GP 232 and it was a joy to fly for my kind of flying, I mostly just sport fly. I would love to have the 580 with a DA-100 on it just to take out and sport fly with it as I don't 3D. Will this plane land slow, I guess my main concern is how are the slow speed tendencies of it? Thanks.
