Great news on the flight!

Not a huge fan of removing significant items to dial in a CG, as it assumes all of the wings are very uniform, and that heavy or light props or spinner don't matter, either. The flight manual should be helpful.

Question
Did you have any issues to achieve the desired CG using the DA50? Where did you put the rudder servos, batteries, tank, etc to achieve it or did you have to add weight to the nose? All stock locations as shown in the assembly manual?

I forgot to tell you to use caution if you use the pull pull setup that comes with the plane. I had everything hooked up and tested it only to have the acble pull out of one end. I replaced it with the Dubro pull pull setup which seems stronger. I also mounted my tank just in front of the wing tube, all batteries up front for balance. I'm a little concerned with the reciever battery up there, but I did several range checks with the engine running and off with no problems. Also when you put the anti rotation pins in the manual says someting about not going by the photo and measuring from the wing to the hole in the pin. I trial fit it like that and it would not work with the o-ring and washer. I ended up using the same measurement in the photo and it worked great. Using the wood stand off blocks along with the standoffs that come with the DA the engine sticks out pretty far, but I beleive it should be like that anyway for better air flow from the prop. I'll post some pictures tonight.

Hey,
I will post some internal pictures of the setup tonight, I mounted the rudder servo where it is in the manual, regulator on top of fuel tank, all batteries up front in engine box. It you don't mount all in the engine box you will need weight with the DA 50. We will have to see if Quique comes up with any other ideas in the flying manual since he switched to DA engines. That should be online next week, hopefully sooner maybe.

Lee, which muffler did you end up using? The Slimline pitts extra weight would help, for sure. How bad was the cutout in the bottom of the cowl that you needed to make?

I used the Slimeline Pitts. I don't think the cut out was that bad, you'll see pictures later. Didn't have to cut it as much as the 3W.

Here are some more pictures. The battery right behind the motor on the bottom of the box was used for temperary weight only for balance. I will fly again in the morning and try to get a video.

I fixed to pound to light problem with my ZDZ 80.
I would rather bolt on power, not lead.

MXCop, what final weight did you come up with? Also, did you fly with the additional weight of a spinner or only bare prop as shown?

Read post #50 about CG. Seems pretty good there so far, maybe just slight nose heavy. Flys like a dream, very smooth and precise. No 3D yet, need more run in on motor.

You can find this plane at http://www.somenzini.com/indexNuevo.htm The 85" runs USD 660, they are expecting the next shipment in October. THe plane is worth the wait and you won't find better customer service than what Wayne and Quique provide.

You can find threads on both the 72" and 102" Yaks here. I think you'll see nothing but favorable comments. I'm "borrowing" the guts (engine, Rx, servos) from a plane that I just finished 3 weeks ago to complete this one. Hopefully that's enough of an endorsement for you! Best of luck.

Perhaps I am not lucky but I have yet to receive a reply from them. I am dying to order the 102' yak but no one wants to reply to my e-mail. Perhaps that's because I am located in canada and they don't want to bother with the shipping. Oh well..[]..These Yaks looks absolutely top quality and seems to fly like a dream from what I heard. This is why I badly want one to practice my intermediate sequence and some 3D.

The covering sheme in genuine ultracote is fabulous. No chinakote crap!

Wayne or Quique, Can I order please?

No spinner yet, was going to get a Pete's spinner, I think thats the name of it. It's carbon fiber, but I may go with something heavier for balance. I think I can take some weight off the front though, I will try that as soon as I get more time on it. I put the plane into a down line spin today and the motor quit. Hopefully it was because it only had 1 tank through it. Deadsticked it in for a great 3 point landing.

Have you tried calling Wayne. Go to Somemzini.com and call the contact number in the evening, he has answered most times and answers messages left also. Give it a try, they are good guys, but you have to understand they are only two guys trying to run this business. They should get better since Quique's move is done now and he is only like 5 minutes away from Wayne.

I have a Pete's Models 3.5 spinner, and I also have a Tru-Turn of the same size with a light backplate. The all up weight difference between the two spinners is 11 grams. 9 grams of which is in the tru-turn adapter nut. So you don't save much weight with the Pete's spinner plus I can tell from experience, all those screws around the base of the Pete's spinner get very irritating to deal with. IMO a Tru-turn is the better option.
Although the Pete's spinner does look great!

QQ's move is not done. I was at a fly in today and asked Andrew Jesky why QQ wasn't there and he said Wayne was helping him move this weekend. So Serge, just be patient and call the number on the site and leave a message. These guys are really trying to up the standards and it is just the two of them.

If this plane flies as well or better (it should being larger) then the 72" it will be awesome! My 72" is the best 3D and overall flying "scale" acrobatic plane I've seen, have or had for its size.

I have not flown the 72" QQ, but do have the E.F. Yak. The 85" QQ is by far the best flying plane I have ever flown so far. So far I have not had to use any mixing. It will knife edge the length of my flying field with rudder imput only. I have a gallon of fuel through the DA 50 now and have started to fly some 3d with it. So far I have nothing bad to say about it's flying abilities, I want to say it is perfect but everyone has their own opinion. It's worth buying and just as good as any other 50 size plane out there, even better in my opinion.

For a reference point, have you determined your CG with your spinner and your prop? Are you happy where it is? What prop are you running?

I am not using a spinner yet. When I balanced the plane I went by what Wayne gave me until the flying manual is finished. Without the prop, spinner, canopy, and wings measure from the front fuse former where the front of the canopy attaches back exactly 7 inches. That should be right in front of the hole for the wing tube. Adjust your equiptment without those things on until it balances out level. Thats all I did and it seems to fly great. May be just a little nose heavy, when inverted I barely have to push to stay level, it locks into a solid harrier with basically no wing rock at that cg. It's a good starting point where you will not have any surprises if you fly it before the flying manual is online. The plane required two clicks of right aileron trim and 4 clicks of up elevator trim with this set up. I'm just going to wait till the manual is up before I make any changes since it is flying so well know. I am still trying to get someone to video a flight so you guys can see it in action, hopefully soon.

Anyone out there close to ready to fly this plane? I guess I was the first one to get one in the air, but I thought for sure someone else would have had one up by now.
