Bob,

It really is, I love the DP Extra as well. They both seem more shaped like Extras as well. A DP with a YS 160...oh my. Its on my to do list.

Well, here are the pictures I promised. Sorry there not any better. You can see where I've got the switches. I have it on the charger now hoping to get some stick time on it tomorrow weather permitting. It's supposed to be nice and I am going to try and get some video as well.

Default RE: New BME Aircraft 30% Extra330L

Well guys I finally put this aircraft in the air. What an airplane and it fly’s very big! The more I fly it the better it gets.

AUW was 15lbs 8oz 100% stock with the wheel pants on. Took the pants off today because our field needs some trimming. Here is what I equipped mine with:

DA-50, Slimline Pitts, and a 23x8 NX prop.
4-5945’s, 1-8611, and 1-225 for the throttle.
3-½ inch Bisson spinner.
3 2400 Fromeco’s
3 MPI Miracle switches/regulators.
20oz fuel tank.
JR 649 Rx.
SWB servo arms.

On the first flight the airplane lifted into the air before I knew I was ready. Two clicks of down and two clicks a of right rudder and I was ready to rock and roll. Flew some basic maneuvers noted how sensitive and powerful the rudder was. The airplane performs very well and in some cases incredible.

In high-alpha knife-edge the plane couples mildly to the wheels. Regular knife-edge needed about 2% up elevator mixed in. Knife-edge loops are easy and as tight as you want to make them. I can darn near do a knife edge wall with it (I am working on it). Elevators descend very slowly. Almost fall to sleep waiting for it to come down. Harriers lock in well but you do have to counter a little wing rock. Blenders are routine. Pour the coals on while in the flat spin and watch it climb or maintain altitude! That’s correct, haven’t seen that one before and had to pick my jaw off the ground afterwards.

Hovering is simple and the plane will recover easily if you get it to far out of shape with little or no additional throttle. The plane is very responsive in a hover and I can back it down from any altitude. Torque rolls are slower than my other planes but look more graceful with the Extra. Aileron authority is fantastic while hovering. I can even counter torque roll it although slow. Walls are very clean and stop right now but not quite as good as my Edge. I am used to my other planes to snap into them and mush forward without altitude gain, which looks really cool. This one just stops and shoots up about five feet.

Now the incredible part…I have never been lower then 50 ft while doing rolling harriers. I almost am on the deck now with this plane and I have about ten flights on it. In a light breeze I can just roll them endlessly right in one spot in front of me which to say the least, looks very impressive. The first couple of flights I thought that the rollers were not great because I would roll up into vertical. I guess because I was used to being more aggressive with the sticks with my other planes to keep the nose up. Because the ailerons are so effective you can do them as slow or fast as you want to. Truly one of the best I have when it comes to rolling harriers. Now if I could only get the rolling loop down.

Tips spins are a real thing of beauty. They are very aggressive and they scare the living piss out me when I do them with this plane. There even better than my Edge, which is awesome, it just took a little longer to figure out how to get it to do it. I swear to god that this airplane is going to rip itself to pieces and the only reason I keep the hammer down is the gasps I hear in the back ground from the people who are watching it. Waterfalls are something to witness as well and very fast. Hover to waterfall and back to hover is no sweat. Still not brave enough to attempt it low.

Sorry for the long post but I am pretty pumped after returning from the field today. I feel like I have crossed into a new level of flying. To be honest in the first couple of flights I felt the airplane was a little too light. But once I figured out what it could do with it…crap…I have to go back to work this week. I’ve been having so much fun this weekend I haven’t even really dialed the radio in yet.

Landing this plane give new meaning to the term floater. I sometimes think it should be done flying because it’s just crawling along, so gently pull back on the stick just before touchdown and back up she goes. Did a bunch of accidental harrier landings today.[8D]

No matter how much babbling I do, there’s nothing like video so I soon as I get the chance I’ll get it posted.

Regards,
Ken

Nice summary of the Extra. It sounds like an awesome plane. It turned out very light for 1420 sqaures. The pictures are neat with the mountains in the back. I'm looking forward to the video.

Thats pretty light with a back up battery. Looks like I'm going to have too abuse my Yak this season in order to buy this one.

You can tell from the turtle deck picture (inside) that this is built by the same people as the TOC1 Yaks. At this wieght and wing area it will put the Yak to shame...too bad I already bought a Yak (ugly FN thing).

raptorbob,

I noticed that too. Especially liked the touch of having the antenae tube installed from the factory. It runs along the bottom of the fuse. However, just like some of the TOC planes (I also have a Yak), am waiting until production models hit the street.

Raptorbob,

Well, I don’t know about putting the Yaks to shame. I also have a Yak and love mine. I agree, I think there kind of ugly as well. But I got to tell you Yaks are great flying airplanes. I am willing to bet that most of them out there fly about the same and that’s why they are so popular. This Extra does not fly like my Yak. Not better or worse just different. IMO the Yaks make pilots look better than they really are, but the Extra makes you a better pilot…if that makes sense. I like it so much, I reserved another Extra coming in the first shipment.

Marzo,

If you like the pictures with the scenic backdrop, check out these. The second one in is my personal favorite. JohnVH took them and even on a dismal kind of day they still look great especially high res. Max, John and myself got together and spent a day together flying...mostly hucking the Extra. We have been abusing the heck out of them. Even got in some formation flying in which was a blast.

Enjoy,
Ken

I'll try and get one posted today. Kind of been waiting for the weather to get better to make another video to really show this plane off. Looks like its not going to happen any time some so I'll use what I have.

Well here is a short video, enjoy! [link=http://media.putfile.com/BME-Aircraft-Extra330L]http://media.putfile.com/BME-Aircraft-Extra330L[/link] If it's slow to buffer I'll upload a smaller version. I've been having some IP problems today so I can't tell.

Yeah, Im in love with my edge II as well.. But have always been partial to Extra's looks.. This extra is so stable in hovers too, look at the vid, hardly any tail corrections.. That goes for all Aeromaster/bme planes Ive flown so far for that matter..

My Edge the other day...

Thanks Joe,

This is a great airplane but it is a little different from the Edge. Max thinks that it's in between the Yak and Edge but I disagree. The Extra is the most maneuverable airplane of the bunch. Each one has there own areas where they shine. I have been having a blast with this plane and it really loves to tumble. Would have liked to have done a better vid but the weather gods had other plans.

Max, has also made some other improvements in production. The canopy and hatch is one piece now and slightly tinted. I believe that the cockpit area is now open. This is already this easiest airplane I've assembled and now it's even easier. It should shave a few more ounces as well but not the reason for the change. He wanted the canopy to have the same clean look as the cowl without any overlap.

Ken
