Default 50% Edge 540 by BH

Further to my correspondence with Bill Hempel (Great Guy, Excellent support,Thanx Bill!) i finally received (and quicker than expected!) my Babe (50% Edge 540) here in Greece/Crete!
For you who are into Giant RC, and have the bug of wanting something bigger and bigger...You will love it!

Box arrived in Athens last week and the customs took sometime in order to get convinced that it is a "Toy" airplane and not a real one...Greeks will never change.
As i was away on a Business trip in Sweden my mother was the one to collect it. It took 4 people to unload it and to get it on the 4th floor that i live..It is HUGE!

1. Some Photos will follow in the next hour.
2. Pricing will follow step by step from ordering it till getting it here in Crete.
3. Construction will take sometime as the plane has to be ready for March in order to advertise my shop on o local fly inn.
4. Construction photos and possible modifications will be here for your info as soon as i will start putting it together.
5. YES => I will need some help from you people! Even though i have been flying for a long time Giant RC it is always better to have your opinion so that i can judge and compare

I am so excited and i just wanted to share it.

I wish you a Happy New Year With many new models and safe landings!!

More to follow

WINGS

I LIKE

1.Excellent job. Covering is great with only a couple of corners to redo due to the heat here in Crete
2.Colours are very "strong" and the symmetry of the covering is 100% in place! (Thats rare)
3.HUGE moving surfaces ( Ailerons => 65" by 6") more than enough for rolling harrier direction changes
4.Servo Space => 3 Servos per wing...
5. Ailerons are mountied like a real plane with a carbon rod going through all the hinging (like full size planes). NO work is needed!
6. Pre positioned dowels enhanced in the moving surface in order to use rocket city Horns ( I assume!)

I DISLIKE

The size of this wings! I cant find wing bags anywhere....

Stabs & elevators

I LIKE

1. The moving surface is LARGER! than the stab..
2. The movement of the Elevator is nearly reaching 90 degrees! (is it enough? )
3. Caron tube as a joiner and two screws at the bottom in order to secure it
4. 2 serbos per stab with nice mounts from good quality ply
5. My scale is broken and i cannot measure the weight of them but i will keep you updated on another post with weights only
6. Again the covering has a great match / Symmetry on the lines etc

I DISLIKE

1. The balsa under the covering has something black in colour on the bottom surface. I assume is the balsa stripe thay used to cover the foam.It is only that the covering is thin and transparent and you can see through a little. Not important though!

RUDDER

I LIKE

1. THE SIZE!!!
2. The construction is perfect! It is formed with Balsa/Ply and foam inside.
3. Very Light and rigid.
4. Covering has once again a perfect match on the scheme on both sides!
5. Goes on the plane again with the same method as the ailerons. NO work is needed except the horns!
6. It is 3" thick on the root!

I DISLIKE
1. The thikness on the root as i cannot find a rod with thread to put it through in order to give me enough room to put the ball links and the springs of the tailwheel

CANOPY HATCH

I LIKE

1. Amazing design and construction! I do not know how you call it there (i think double truss ???).foam inside on the areas that need volume filling
2. Very light. Very strong. Very rigid
3. Easy to fit as there is NO bending moments at all when you grab it from any corner
4. HUGE!

I DISLIKE

1. The imperial thread on all the mounting screws!!! S*it! We only use metric here and i have already lost a couple of the screws!

COWL

I LIKE

1. I have never seen a cowl at this size that has no twist effect at all! It is more rigid than the hatch!
2. It weighs approx 980gr (this is the weight Bill mentioned of the prototype) but mine will be less!
3. It has a very clever mounting that allows no screws to be visible on the naked eye. all screws are mounted from inside the fuse.
a. On the upper section of the fuse and in front of the hatch
b. On the bottom front end of the plane just i front of the Landing gear
4. A frame of ply has been used all around the rear "face" of the cowl in order not to allow the twisting mentioned above.
5. It is huge! I can fit some indoor helis in there for storage until it will be ready to use on the plane.

I DISLIKE

1. AGAIN those damn screws!! NOT METRIC gives me headache!

PILOT & CANOPY

I LIKE

1. The canopy has a very flexy material and it is very easy to handle.Usually you cannot mess with them as they break!
2. This one you can use for volleyball! (DO NOT TRY IT AT HOME )
3. It is tinted and has a red line all around at the glueing poitns
4. the colouring of the Head is great and the total outcome is fabulus as it is a very good match with the scheme of the airplane. It would be good to have the red/yellow checkers on his helmet for a 100% match!

I DISLIKE

1. Not really a dislike. only that i do NOT KNOW how to glue it on the hach! [&:]

I like the RC 56 canopy glue, it is white and dries clear, but is kind of runny. So, the fix is put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes and it thickens up nicely, put your bead on the canopy and set in place. Any excess cleans with a wet washcloth, and I use painters tape to hold it down overnight. Works like a champ and have not had one come loose this way. Another note, is I use some sandpaper and rough up the inside of the canopy lip where the glue attaches and a bit on the covering as well on the hatch.

Looks awesome! What enging you going with, 3W 275?

Hi there. forgive my late reply...I am trying to upload all the photos and i am struggling!

engine => I am still thinking about it. Maybe the new 3w275 or the 4 cylinder EVO. Bill had the 3W240 and it looked that the plane had enough power for all the flying until its funeral. But i still do not know which one to use.
I am open to any suggestions you can make! From what i originally think, so far i have been dealing with DA engines with no problems at all. To go to 3W will be a problem for me as i do have a modelshop and i sell DA! thus i think using an EVo 300cc will do the job. it is just the size and the weight that i have to look into.

CANOPY => And what do i do with the covering on the bottom where the canopy should be glued. To i glue the canopy on the covering, or do i remove the covering from the hatch?? On my H9 ultimate i glued the canopy with double sided tape and some small and good looking screws but now the covering has come loose all around.

Thanx

FUSE

I LIKE

1. It is HUGE!
2. It is very well covered and ironed
3. It has very good materials inside, and very smart construction that will be able to keep it flying for long at demanding manouvering
4. It has plenty of room for any possible gadget you may want to put inside
5. It has a pre-side trust adjust
6. It is pre cut for all the servos to be used!

I DISLIKE

1. It has a 5 servo pre cut mount wich is part of the actual airframe and if i cut it it will weaken the frame. It might be a problem (small though) as i was planning to use a SEICO servo instead of 5 titanium hi-tec.It would be better for the weight the power needed the cost and the complexity of tuning all these servos. (thanx Powerbox for making the adjusterboard on your Champion series!)

2. The firewall might need a little of reinforcement. I am not sure yet. I will try to complete a stress analysis on ANSYS static & Dynamic in order to see any potential problems and i will let you people know

I glue the canopy to the covering itself, havent had it come lose yet. You can always go back over it with trim tape (3M is best) or the small screws, but I havent had the need to do that. I have done it when the canopy does not have a painted lip because it looks better, but on the canopies with the painted lip I do not. I trace an outline with a dry erase marker where the canopy goes, then take some 1000 grit sandpaper and rough up he covering where the canopy will be glued to it.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXCX70&P=ML this is one, it is called formula 560, and is essentially RC 56, whichever you can find and both apply the same way.

Cool deal, the 3w 275 should be a winner. The evo 300 looks promising too, unfortunately DA has nothing that will work for you. Not a whole lot of options out there for 50% engines. One more thing you can do about the canopy mounting, is after you rough up the covering a tad, you can use a t-pin or such to poke some small holes in the covering.

Ok, i assume prior the glueing to do the little holes to allow for the glue to go through? Yea, what else..Good. It will take a week or so in order to get the glue from Us/Tower here in Crete but it will do the job i hope!

Looks really nice... it IS a biggun!

On the screws... it doesn't appear as if the blind nuts are anything more than pulled into the wood they are in...

Take one you DO have, screw it part way into each blind nut and gentu tap it with a small hammer or end of a screw driver to pop out the blindnuts...

Get yourself a handful of metric blindnuts and screws and VIOLA... instant Metric Conversion...

Thanx Maudib

the only issue is that the Damn chinese woman, boy or kid who glued the blind nuts did a Great Job! I tried to take one out but instead of the nut the whole ply popped out! Back in place with a litle epoxy.

It seems that the cowling will keep its blind harware. But the rest i am preety sure they will go easy..Another solution is either to move and live in the US or buy some hundrends of different screws from there!
