Default Spectrum Conversion

Hi All,

I am going to convert my 40% carden edge to spectrum and wanted some input from the group before making this leap. My plan is to use a DX7 (until I get a 9303) with AR7000rx into a smart fly power expander sport and super reg. I am planning to use my current flight power 4400 bats into the reg. Anyone know of any issues with this setup? Servos are 8411s. THX

I just converted my 10x radio and my 40% carden 300. No need to change any thing other than receiver and module, so far I got six flights on it with no issues other than the fact that I keep wanting to pull the antenna out. LOL

only change I've had to make on the 2 planes I switched over was some fine tuning on the matchbox to my rudder.

On a Carden edge with 8411 servos I would assume you have 3 on each wing and 2 on each elevator half, 3 or 4 on the rudder. I would go with the EQ 10 power expander and a turbo regulator in a 40% plane. You will be able to match all the servos on the eq 10, it also buffers all the servo leads.

The AR 7000 rx/dx-7 will work fine with this setup, no chance of low voltage resets. Remember to use pmix 5 or 6 for the 2nd elevator mixing.

35% Carden Extra with AR9000 and 10x with 2.4 module. SmartFly Power Expander sport. 4 5955 on aileron, 2 8611 on elevator, 1 5735 on rudder, one sub-micro on throttle, 1 4 cell 5600 TBM Li-ion battery.

No issues, working great so far.

No issues at all.

Make sure you provide to the RX from the regulated 5v feed. The rest can run easy on 6V.

yarom, I thought spectrum's liked 6V and some are starting to run 8V to the RX?

I finished up the conversion and put 4 flights on it Friday all went well. I changed the servos to 5955TG, 2 ail, 1 elev and really like the programmer very quick, great matching.

Need to dial her in for the vegas contest in a few weeks. Had to go with 2 different programs in the DX7 one for precision and other for 3d. Need the 9303TX.

THX for the comments

I just made the switch to a DX7 too. I used the Smart Fly Sport with no porblems on my 35%. The only thing I did was mount the receiver behind the power expander just to keep the antenna's away from the power supply leads.

It works exceptionally well but the balance feels weird without the antenna hanging off the front of the transmitter.

Read about Quique Simozini failer with a power regulator here: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Articles...ArticleID=1674

Also note the Spektrum Rx will reboot if the voltage mometaraly falls below 3.7volts which is possible with multiple servo's operating at the same time, just a heads up, trying to be helpfull, not contraversial.

I have done the exact same conversion on 30% planes with absolutely no issue.

Same Smartfly equipment - same servos.

I now use mostly a converted 9303 and AR9000 setups with no issue as well.

If the power expander provides regulated and isolated 5.1V to the Rx. There is no reason to feed it more voltage, despite the fact it can go as high a 7.2V as well.

The only thing to avoid, and mentioned elsewhere here, is that the Spektrum Rx reboots when the voltage deeps below 3.7V. Since these drops (might) happen only when all servos are pulling together and since these are now on two separate circuits, the PE protects the Rx.

To be honest, one could just provide the Rx with power from a small 6v battery and have the servos running on a separate large A123 6.6V pack. It would achieve the same effect. My understanding is that the power expander (coupled with a regulator) does just that.

I just got off the phone with Robert at Smart Fly. He just said to make sure that if you are using Spektrum your base output voltage is set at > 6.0V on the regulator and there should be no problem. I checked mine and it was set to 5.5, so I bumped it up to about 6.2V.
