Default Removable rudder

I need to be able to remove the rudder on a 35% SD Yak so I can transport. Does anyone have any ideas on exactly how to accomplish this.

I have seen this done on 40% - no reason why it can't be done on 35%. What I saw was the use of hinges on rudder that required a pin. Then one long pin from a piece of wire comes down thru the top of the rudder. An indentation with a piece of tape to hold it during flight. Hope this helps.

Have a look at the Composite ARF aircraft they use a pin and phenolic plate in the rudder and fin post that the pin pushes through and is taped into position.

How do you get a pin down through the hinges on a rudder that has a counter balance. It looks to me like the hinge line is protected by the counter balance

Just food for thought -

The new Hangar 9 Extra 260 comes with a removable rudder. Horizon's manuals are always outstanding. So, you might want to download the manual and examine the photo for how they've done it.

Have fun! Going to have to do the same thing on my 37% ulti to get it in my rig!

I had some hardware for sale called "De-Hinge"s, that are specifically made for this purpose. If you could rotate the surface to exactly 90 degrees from the "normal" position, you can remove the surface, if you used these when you built the surface. I had them in an ad, but I can't find it now. They are made for surfaces that are 3/8" thick at the hinge-line, and I have a few that are for 1/2" thick surfaces.
If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you a photo and more info when I get home tonight.

Yeah, That's how I did mine. Use the Dubro heavy duty nylon hinges(the ones with the removable cotter pins (part#257) Substitute .047 piano wire for the cotter pins and on the bottom of the rudder, build a structure (appropriate length and thickness piece of 5/16 sq. hardwood or similar) to hold an aluminum strap using threaded inserts in the hardwood and 2/56 or 4/40 screws as fasteners through the strap to capture the piano wire. You will have to be able to remove the tailwheel bracket (2 or 3 screws) to access the strap hold down screws. Works great but takes about 15 minutes to setup. I hope this makes sense!

I had a 35% SD Extra 260 that was set up similar to what Bass1 has. Mine went out the top, was bent over on an "L" shape and I used a wheel collar on the bottom. Romove the wheel collar, pull the paino wire and off comes the rudder.

Dan, That's a good way to go. Saves the hassle of having to remove the tailwheel bracket to insert and remove the hinge pin (piano wire).

On the Composite ARF the pin goes in at the top of the counterballance and is taped in place for flight, it has a right angle bend on the top.
