Default H9/Carden Yak 54

Hey guys,
For anyone interested the H9/Carden Yak. The manual has been posted on the Horizon website.
It looks pretty good based on the pics, I,m just hoping that my MTW 75 cannister [ not the MTW75K ] will fit, with some slight mods.
I,m really looking forward to this release as it should be a competitive alternative to the other Yak,s available at this time.
Besides being able to drive down to the LHS and pick it up is a pleasant change to crossing my fingers every time a new plane gets shipped to me via UPS.

Thats what I am looking at too.I can get it local, the LHS will cover any issues/warranties and will have parts support without having to pay for extra shipping.I am just finalizing some numbers.
There are other proven designs that I really want, but this one may just be the best choice for me at this time.Everything is hinged also, this maybe just 2-3 easy evenings to get ready [8D]

I agree with your assessment completely.
Its easy to just get one through the LHS and parts availability is usually pretty good or at least has been in the past for me
I,m hoping to get mine going ASAP as well. as you mentioned it should go together quickly.

I was just on the Horizon site and came across the info that the Carden Yak has been delayed until mid June.
Talking about a bummer!
Hopefully the wait will be worthwhile.
Time to start pulling together all the parts neccessary for my 74" EF Yak.

I really want this plane for a future build. I hope to maybe have the money saved and the plane purchased and assembled for 2009. [)]

I see - that story comes again...

As much as I like the idea of a lighter engine with more power, I parted with all my BME stuff a while ago.

I was sorry to do so, but an engine manifacturer has to communicate with the customers and they need to be assured there is service available at the end of the line.

I am absolutely willing to take a few ounces penalty, just to get to fantastic service DA provides and know it is a long term investment...

Now, that is a better story.

Do you have any specs on this one? Weight? dimensions? prop?

It is extremely close to the weight of the DA 50.Supposedly the way you see it in the pic is 1450g.

The mounting pattern, exhaust and prop bolt pattern are the same as the DA 50.

It's actually a 56cc engine..Don't ask me why they call it a 54..They call their 74cc engine an EVO 80 Marketing I'm sure [)]

I should see it next week and will know the exact weight then.

OK, I just found the stats:

Cylinder capacity: 56.2 cm3
• Power: 5,5 HP 4,01kW
• Bore dia.: 44 mm
• Stroke: 37 mm
• Speed range: 1100-8500 rpm
• Weight: 1,450 Kgs.
• Crankshaft: 2 Ball bearings
• Gasoline-Version: 1 : 50 - 1 : 80 Mix
• Electronic ignition: Epower 4,8 V- 9 V. Lipo batteries also.
• Propeller 2-bladed / Ã* 2 pales: 20x12 21x10 21x12: 22x10 Propeller 3-bladed / Ã* 3 pales: 18x10 19x10 19x12

List price is approx $900, which is what happens when something is produced in the Euro zone.

For some reason they do not have 23x8 recommended on their list. If the engine was stronger than the DA, it would even have 24x8 as a possible prop.

Hi Guys,
Thanks Wingburner for clearing up any misconception of it being a BME engine.[sm=wink_smile.gif]
I got the original info about this engine from Wingburner via another forum and just couldn,t help myself posting it here on RCU since the EVO engines have a good reputation in europe
for making very good power and being reliable as well.
I sent an email to Roger today so we,ll see what happens re getting one myself.
Wingburner I sent you a pm.
thx
Dave

We fly at 3600' or so. I've seen 14-16lb planes with DA-50's and Evolution 45GX2's not necessarily be enemic, but they certainly didn't seem overpowered. What do you guys think of the Evolution 58GX2 in this airframe? I've got the 45GX2 and I absolutely love it.

I think the Evolution 58 is going to be the perfect engine for this plane..On their tuned canister it would simply be awesome.
You likely won't notice the little extra weight of the 58 to much as this plane has a good amount of wing area.

Considering and amount a DA-50 portrudes out of the not-very-scale cowl, I would think the evolution night require even more cowl carving...

Yeah, I think the Evolution 58gx will require some additional cowling to be removed.
Based on pics available at present which show a DA50 install the only cowl relief required is a small opening for the spark plug cap.
I don,t think that the Evolution will require anything more than a opening just for the head to protrude slightly. Besides its on the underside and won,t look all that bad I,m sure.
Horizon has changed the expected delivery yet again back to late May.
Lets hope that the trade winds push that freighter a little faster across the Pacific Ocean.

I really don't mind having to cut the cowl on the bottom. If you've downloaded the manual, they have you cut the cowl from the head all the way back. That's with a DA-50. I can't imagine you would need more clearance than that for the 58GX2. It's not just a simple square cut out.

Well I just bought a MVVS/Evolution 58GX for this baby.
My earlier thoughts on a EVO54 were just that, they cost a whole bunch to be shipped individually from Spain. Besides I got a great deal on a NIB 58GX.
Now I just need to find a return to center header for this engine. However I may just start with a Evolution pitts muffler.
As for the manual, I,m not going to hack a hole in my cowl as large as is shown. I have had good success with opening up a hole large enough for the cylinder head and additional cooling holes further aft on the cowl. The QuiQui Yak is very similar in size and a number of guys have made a nice job of the cowling cutouts in a thread in his support forum, thats what I,m going with.
thx
Dave

I fly a SD-Model 30% Yak with the Evolution 58. Many of my buddies have the same plane on a DA-50. There is a big difference in performance of the 58 versus the 50. I think you will be real happy with your selection. It is larger than the DA-50, but worth it in my opinion.

Just a setup suggestion - skip the auto choke feature on the engine and set up a manual linkage or a servo-operated choke on a channel in your receiver. Myself and several others running the Evolution line had nothing but troubles with the auto choke. Now that we are not using that feature, our Evo's start within the 3rd or 4th flip consistently. They are as good as a DA in that department.

Have fun! Can't wait to see what that H9/Carden Yak looks like in person!
