Default 35% Edge 540 to 35% Slick 540

Many of you are aware of a relatively new aerobatic design called the Slick 540. Essentially it's an Edge 540 fuselage and tail section utilizing Extra 260 wings.

Wild Hare is now experimenting with their 35% Edge design by adapting wings from their 260 to fit the Edge fuselage. Performance is working oiur quite well with a plane that is maintaining the "loose" qualities of the 540 but also having the stability of the Extra which permits better precision aerobatics.

Just for curiousity sake, would any of your folks be interested in the availability of a 35% Edge that had the option of a second set of wings to permit an easy fieldd change from one type of aircraft to another? At the moment each set of 260 wings needs to be modified to fit the 35% Edge but if the interest was there wings could be production built to be a straight and simple swap. Due to differences in wing design and MAC location minor changes in the CG location is also required with a wing swap, but that could be easily planned for in the initial assembly phase of the plane.

Thanks for your responses regardless of the opinion.

Pat

Sounds interesting. Just come up with some better trim schemes for the planes.

Hi Mr. Roy,
The 540 Slick sound like a great idea. The 35% is alittle bit big for me but a 28% version would be neat. Too bad it wouldb't apply to the older versions tho. Both my V-1 28% Edge and V-1 Baby edge are still flying to this date.

With enough interest endless possibilities exist. I'm afraid you're out of luck with the V-1 planes though.

This could be a really cool idea. Could be a complication for some people as far as going from single aileron servo to two of them. On my Extra I have a Smart fly equalizer in each wing with one servo lead going to the reciever, could be one way to work with that.
Anyone ever try Edge wings on an Extra?

I think you would find that there would be matching #s of servos. So swaping wings wouldn't be too much of a problem. The biggest problem would be setting up each set of wings the first time and then advanced trimming if you went that far.

If you did it right the CG thing could maybe be addressed by simply adding or removing your spinner depending on which wings you had on.

I think it could be an interesting idea though.

It has Already been done on a Wild Hare 35% Edge. I bought the Wonder Edge that Tom had as a proto type and a freind of mine bought the last blue and yellow extra 300 from Tom and got a extra set of wings and I got them and adapted them to my edge here is where i started a thread and talked with Tom about the C.G. Here's the plane I've been flying for the last few weeks. It has wings from the older 105" Extra, I had the tops re-covered to match the fuse a little better. I've ordered a couple pairs of the newer style wings that can be set up with either single or dual aileron servos.

I have several sets of these older Extra 300 wings in the older scheme sitting here, would make them available at low cost to people who want to try this. In addition to re-covering the tops, you need to modify the fuselage by adding another hole for the anti-rotation dowel and two for the retainer screws, and set the incidence.

The replacements I have ordered will be a 100% bolt in design, no modifications needed at all.

As far as changing the radio setup for dual servos that's really not necessary. I set these up matching the two wing servos mechanically, it's really not very difficult if you understand a little geometry, they operate off a Y cable and are trimmed the same as the Edge wings so I can switch back and forth as I desire. But the new ones will be set up for a singtle servo which I know from experience is plenty.

BTW you can see the outline of an airfoil on the side of the fuse, that's where the Giles wings would go if I put them on it. I have actually flown th eold Wonder Edge with a set of Giles wings, it's an excellent flying plane but does not qualify as a scale plane any more.

There should be a set of the Extra wings arriving at my house today for me to do the adaptation with.

I think it's kind of a cool idea for those that might like a little diversity in one plane. Of course a second set of wings would add to the kit cost but it's a lot less than it would be than buying another plane. Trimming should be pretty easy all in all.

A little Bigger but this is the 150cc Version of the Slick 540.

Great plane and looks huge in the air really presents well!

Ended up with a balance point of 5 1/8" back from leading edge.

Beautiful Plane and flies great! took 1 degree of Aileron differential

Had some challenges with it but got her pretty well worked out now.

Minor Mods that were done:

1. Glued bolts in wing and have hand knobs (like a Comp ARF) to tighten the wings on. (After a blind nut stripped out in the wing on the plane (had to drill it out and dowel it). Nice for assembly and dis-assembly. No tools needed and less to keep up with.
2. Tapped out the 4-40 canopy bolt holes to 8-32 and replaced with Nylon thumb bolts (again after a few blind nuts stripped out). Advantage is the Nylon does not have to be tightened as much (so no worry about crushing the balsa fuse), they don't vibrate out and the thumb nuts don't require any tools just fingers.
3. Backed inside of fuse where the canopy bolts go with 1/32 plywood to keep the fuse holes from getting enlarged the balsa fuse is very soft there.
4. Tri-Stock in the motor box along the inside top and bottom sides along with 1/4"X1/2" hardwood sticks on the top of the box to tie it all together (after the firewall broke loose 3rd flight)
5. Painted the wheel pants
6. Titanium Axles
7. Carbon Wing and tail tube
8. H9 Carbon Tail wheel assembly with Dietrich stock wheel
9. Best of all DuRant Direct Drive Servo System http://www.durantdirectdrive.com/ They are amazing plus saved 14oz........ Too cool (Free smoke system)

I'm running the following:

* DA-150 in cowl mufflers
* (7) 8711's all around (DuRant Direct Drive)
* Spektrum AR9100 powersafe receiver
* (3) A123 2300mah batteries
* Wright RC Virtual Cockpit
* H9 35% Helmet head with Micro servo installed (Head turns)
* Dry Weight 37.6 Lbs

Plus has Sullivan Smoke system at the above weight.
Flies Light as a feather. More than enough power.
