Any Station Wagon owners out there
Hi All,
I'm going to trade my ity-bity Kia for some something larger next month. I've been considering a second hand Subaru Legacy Wagon. Can I squeeze a 40% plane in that car? I really don't want to go for a mini-van. Any suggestions are welcome. I hate trading cars but the KIA is just toooo small.
Thanks
Mitch

I have an Outback that I can fit my 30% Edge in or my 2 meter pattern plane but it's a solo trip once I get one of those loaded in the car. Not sure if a 40% would fit comfortably. I'd go for the minivan, actually I'm looking for a nice used one for a plane hauler, you can never have too much room to comfortably and safely haul your plane.

Thanks petec. I was actually thinking 30%. I thought about buying a second hand van. But hate the idea of a second insurance bill. But it would be nice to have the room.

my 1992 BUICK ROADMASTER ESTATE WAGON (built in the great state of TEXAS) seems to be gentle on my planes and has room to pick up friends to go out to the field.

1992 Roadmaster... now that's a car. I just can't see myself driving it as an everyday vehicle. A long time ago, when I first started driving, someone gave me a beat up rusted out Lincoln town car with suicide doors. I bet I could fit a a 30% edge in that!

Kind of coincidental that this thread has a popped up. I've been looking at older Volvo station wagons for plane haulers lately after noticing how long they are especially the pre 95' models. I've seen quite a few that are driven by "little old ladies" in basically like new condition with both 4 and 6 cylinder versions. My flying field is 80 miles round trip and daily trips can be quite expensive fuel wise after awhile with my 8 cylinder guzzler. You could easily haul two 30% planes in the Volvo wagons and probably a 40% with the rudder removed. Prices vary from $1500 to $3000 for the older models and alot of them were "garage kept" which make them an attractive economical substitute for a mini van. Although a good rear wheel drive 6 cylinder mini van will also tow my bass boat so I'm still on the fence about what to get myself for a second vehicle to carry around my toys..

Yeah, On second thought a 40% airplane is quite large now that I think about it unless it's a 40% model of one of those little Cri Cris!.

Dick Hanson used to bring his 40% Radiocraft Extra to the field in his little 1994 Subaru Loyale Wagon (the SMALL wagon). Of course the tailgate couldn't close all the way but he got the whole plane in there. There is a picture around here somewhere.
The Legacy is MUCH larger so it might work!

I think I just found a good excuse to buy another plane. I need to make sure it fits in the car. I think a friend of mine owns some giant scale. Perhaps I'll borrow his plane. I'm tempted to buy an old 2nd car just to move the planes. But I hate the hassle. I've got a month or so to decide. The Dodge Magnum is very interesting also.

I'm getting ready to get rid of my plane hauler myself. I just got a bigger one. The one I'm getting rid of is a Lumina APV mini van. It will fit a 35% plane easily with the stabs removed and the rudder between the seats. A 40% plane might fit. Too bad your so far a way as I'm letting it go for $850. I haul my drums also with the van and I couldn't fit the family with it all loaded up, so I picked up a full size Suburban, used of course.

Yeah, I Illinois is a bit too far[X(]. I'm still considering a second vehicle. But I really don't want the headache of driving an old car.

I've got the Magnum and can haul my Goldberg Obsession and my OMP 67" Fusion at the same time with all tailfeathers attached. The Obsession is 83 inches nose to tail. This is with the passenger seat all the way forward and tilted slightly forward and rudder turned a little also.I also got my 8x8 popup canopy,2 chairs in a bag,a transmitter case and my 2 gallon gas can plus my gallon of nitro and my tool tray.Takes awhile to get it all in but it's great for those close one day flyins.Plus that car is good looking.....

I do know for a fact that 41 & 42 percent Extras will fit inside the back of 2007 -2010 Ford Expedition EL as in extended length and both front seat people are comfortable.

I will jump in and suggest a Dodge Grand Caravan with the stow and go seating set-up. With the seats folded into the floor you can fit full size sheets of plywood, so a 40% should be no problem!

You know you are addicted to large aircraft when...... you buy a mid sized van just for hauling your planes. I have a 2001 Chevy Astro, without any rear seats, for hauling my toys. I have transported 2 x 40% Extra's together with all support gear in comfort. It was pointed out to me recently that on any typical flying day that the contents of the van far exceeds to value of the van. It is field equipment, I say.

40% Yak-54 (3.3m, 3W200TS) in a Daewoo Nubira Wagon; (enginecowl is normally screwed on the plane, no problem with transport)
This Yak a lot bigger then my 40% Extra's (3.2m) so with an Extra in this car, there is still some free space
