PowerBox Competition w/Sparks Switch

Hey guys...quick question.

I am in the middle of putting together an AJ Raven w/DA70 and I am using the PowerBox Competition. I went with the competition model over the Professional because it gives the mah used out of the batteries on the display and that gives me another data point and safety margin in managing the A123’s.

I have dual A123 batteries from NoBs going into the PB, and each has a separate three wire charge lead, in addition to the 14AWG main power feed with deans connector.

I would like to use a PB Sparks switch (instead of the BEC that I have used in the past) to run my ignition except I don’t want to carry a third battery.

Since the PB has some kind of battery balancing algorithm to bring both batteries down together, I’m wondering if I can use the three wire charge lead (eliminating the balance wire in the process) and plug that into the Sparks switch to power the ignition. So, one battery would be doing dual duty by supplying power to the servos and to the ignition while the other battery would be powering only the servos. At that point, I would be relying on the PB balance algorithm to monitor things...

What do you think, can I rig things this way?

Im not so sure how the PB will react. As it tries to pull more from the non-ignition battery, my fear is it will interrupt the ignition voltage as the sparks switch would be wired “around” the PB.

Did I explain that correctly?

Probably best filed under 'not relevant to the thread' but I have never used a power box of any type. I fly 3W's and DA's (100cc, 106cc, 120cc, 170cc) and just use 2 good batteries and 2 good switches. A couple of appropriately sized batteries and you should have far in excess mAh's for a day's flying. Track the usage through a good charger and eliminate the unneeded power management box.

I do have a Spark Switch on a DA120 powered plane though and have ordered another one.

Again, probably not relevant but felt like commenting...............

Dhal,

What you are saying is certainly a valid way to do it..but please don’t forget, a PowerBox gives you way more than power management.

Tom, no doubt as I've seen them in planes and they look pretty neat. I'll follow your thread here and see how your idea goes.

OK I talked with PowerBox directly. They indicated that while I can do it as I suggested above, I would lose the opto isolation circuit (and benefit) which would kind of defeat that purpose.

So, its either go with the sparks switch and a third battery or, just get a standard BEC ignition and plug directly into the PowerBox and operate it on/off with a toggle switch on the transmitter.

The latter is how I have done it historically, so, I’ll be staying with that option. One less battery to charge and monitor in addition to the weight savings.

Just thought I would follow up on my decision.

Almost time to start flying!
