Barts thread is getting pretty full. With the almost completion of mine, yet to cold to fly, thought maybe we could get another thread started.

Questions
What engine do you have on your edge and did you go by the instructions when you mounted it?
|
Another 540 Edge Thread
I agree about the other thread, just about to start mine, 3W 70 will be going up front, using airtronics 94358s all the way around and one hitec giant digital pull pull on the rudder to try to get a good balance without adding weight. Using lithiums on it, and light everywhere else to keep it around 20-21lbs. How did yours balance with the G-62 up front? how much does the G62 weigh? are your rudder servos in the tail or pull pull in the fuse?

Another 540 Edge Thread
All The servo's are going in the Tail. I decided on the hitec 645mg's toss between digital, After all I read, the digitals seemed to be pretty pricy. If you don't plan on taking full advantage of them It's wasted money i.e. I'm running a jr 549 reciever PPM/ fm. So not being pcm and not planing on buying the digital programer I thought it would be money spent somewhere else. My 2 cents!
The G-62 wieghs out pretty good (log) so it will add the needed wieght to the front. I am not a 3D dude anyway Just a couple of tricks and race it around is all I need! To each his own! Looking forward to the first flight, I really hope this lands at a crawl without getting tippsy. I have an Ace Extra 230 with a 3.8 on it and it is a flying brick! You cut power 2 feet from the ground and pray and shake everytime you land it! I really hope the Edge will be differnt, I'm looking for fun and excitment not a freakin Ulcer! Lets see some edge pics!---------Tom |
Landing Gear?
Guys,
Has lanier upgraded there axels on the 540 yet and if so when? Mine look like the B&B specialties axels at my local hobbyshop. I know those are good. Iam not going to chance it though I'll change them anyway. I know this has been a discussion item forever and was just curious if Lanier ever got the message and upgraded. The 120 size had gear issues as far as the whole gear ripping out on landing, Lanier's new 120's use aluminum stock in the fuse to reenforce. No problems since. Just a question? Tom |
Another 540 Edge Thread
as far as I know, I have one of the newest ones, the axles didnt look too great, so replaced them and the tires.
|
Another 540 Edge Thread
Is that the Lanier arf?
|
ARF
Yes its the 30% arf.

I have a newer kit of the plane, and have read all the complaints regarding the LG. I inspected the gear VERY close, and could not find anything wrong w/it, so I chose to use the stock axles, and tires. I agree that the tires are too hard, but I can easily change them out later. I am nearly ready for the test flight, and am looking forward to it.I have put as much weight forward as possible, and have installed the rudder servo in front w/pull pull. I'm glad to see the new thread, and will follow it closely.

MLG
Bill,
Please keep us informed on the gear issue. My kit is a little older, about a year. I swear the axels look like B&B's though, I am wondering if the axels are what actually failed or if people were having trouble with the gear itself. Lanier did make achange to that by adding the aluminum stock over the mount holes. Anyway I will be curiuos if your axels hold up. I heard they pop out of socket about the fifth hi speed taxi/landing. Tom |

My plane was from the first production run, and it had the aluminum stock inside the fuse for reinforcement. On my axles, as I tightened them they pulled right thru the pressed on hub and did not even make it off the bench. I put on Dubro's and they saw ALLOT of abuse and one heck of a side load after a fellow flier took her up for a spin. Lost directional control on takeoff and she took a big hop that bent the gear way under BUT THE AXLES HELD.

Ak, were the servo holes for the ailerons on your first run production real deep. It looks like I'm really going to have to shim the heck out of mine to get the horns to clear. I double nuted my axels, but i think Im going to spend the 5.00 and change them anyway.
tom |
Another 540 Edge Thread
The aileron holes were too long for the servos but the depth was fine. The rudder servos would not clear the elevator servos so I had to drop them down. Good call on the axles... it would be a shame to mess the plane up over 5.00 axles. If you fly off of pavement the tire that came with it only last ~ 10 flights before they were down to the rims. The tail wheel only lasted 3 flights.

Another 540 Edge Thread
I'm flying off of grass, but am planing on changing the wheels along with the axels. did you do any regluing or mods to the lower fuse. My balsa seems week running from frame to frame.

Another 540 Edge Thread
My lower longerons were broken out of the bottom in three places due to the wing tube flying around in there during shipping. All three of the planes we ordered at the same time, had the same damage, in the same location. The longerons are kinda flexible but the plane is not meant to be carried from underneath. I carry mine by the wing tube or pull it by the prop. The fuse has proven to be a very strong package in flight and I would not worry about it if the longerons are not broken from shipping.
|
cracked
Well mine is clean on the underneath expect I cracked a longeron under the fuel tank from carry it to put in the stand a couple of days ago. So need to put an epoxy repair there, but I'll leave the rest as is. AK are you using the low rate throws on the flight control surfaces or have you modifide the throws after flight? I'm hoping for a very stable plane that can land at a crawl Unlike my 230 30%.

This bird is solid as a rock at any throw I have used. I use 140% for 3D with --65 on the expo for elev. 140% and 100% on ailerons with -25 expo. Rudder is 140% and just enough to hold knife edge on low. Lands like a trainer with no surprises.

Quick question?
Okay I have 645mg's on the rudder one servo to the master rudder channel the other is put in the aux 3 channel. I have mixed them together at 125% . I have good throw and good centering I also offset the slave to positive center. My question is that I get a chatter from the servos while under no load. Even with one or the other disconnected the servo will chatter intill i bump the stick. Two servos mixed equally rigged on one flight surface is this okay or not. I do'nt want them fighting each other causing a possible freeze on one?
Thanks Tom |
Another 540 Edge Thread
I did a search under the radio forum, from what I can tell my setup is okay. i just do'nt like the chatter from the servo's but could be from a number of reasons. I would be curious if anyone els is using a set-up like mine. Two servos two seperate channels mixed together on one flight surface. One pulling and one pushing. If anyone has there two cents worth of info i would welcome it.
Thanks Tom |
Another 540 Edge Thread
Are you using 100% for the travel or 140%. I have had this happen with the 645's when I was going 140 % due to the not so great centering it was allways hunting (chattering) for center. I am not sure what you mean by off setting the slave for positive centering ???
|
Another 540 Edge Thread
AK, My radio is a JR 8103 with digital trims. This radio has a 6 channel programable mix. Anyway you have full time mixing of program 5 and program 6 that will also incorperate the digital trims. Channel 5 mixes elevator to aux 2 for the elevator halfves. Channel 6 mixes rudder to aux 3 which is the other rudder servo. these are mixed at 125% with throws set at 125% On these programable mixing channels there is an offset measurement you can set to give the slave channel (being aux3 for rudder) A positive center. With all this set correctly I was getting a humming out of both servo's under no load............To make a long story short I turned one increment out on the left control clevis and this solved my problem. Well Tomarrow I run and trim the Motor....hope it starts......Tom
